Don't know why I haven't read about this earlier. Has anyone done this to their Golf? if so, how much extra fuel have you managed to fit it?
Also, are their any issues to be aware of once venting is done i.e does the trip computer take issue with the extra fuel on board in terms of it's calculations? How about the filling up process itself?

    Cheers
I think I read somewhere the volume of the expansion tank around 12L - should be documented in Erwin.

Trip computer is a bit confused until the fuel needle starts to go down, because it doesn't know what the tank has in it when "overfull". But it correctly records distance to date and distance to empty when the needle starts going down.

(Wishing there might be a VAG-COM adaptation to adjust the fuel tank sensor calibration.)

Can hear air expelled via vent during filling. Last 10L or so is slower.

Ventectomy -- New guy\'s first mod! It took about 45 seconds. No, it's true! Less than a minute in below freezing temps. The photos posted in a thread on this subject were fantastic, and a tremendous help. I can't find the thread right now, but whoever posted the pics, I say THANKS! Greg

Rather than throw the vent parts out, I put the vent base through a few coils of spring so it doesn't seal but I don't have to keep the spare parts anywhere special.
        Hey All,

I had a look at doing this on my Golf the other week and it doesn't appear that it's possible, there's certainy no vent parts around the filler.
Has anyone done this on their Mark V Golf?

        Cheers in advance.

          REGARDING VENTING:

you should see what looks like a tiny little knob/ button, towards the top of your fuel tank mouth- grab a couple of plastic surgical gloves (7 bucks for a box of 100 from safeway) and have a feel around there.

you should find it by feel, if not by sight. push it around in different directions and you'll soon see which way it gives- all you need to do to "vent" the fuel tank is fill up until fuel hose shuts off, reach in and push the vent button (you will hear gas escaping), replace pump and add a little more until shutoff, vent again, and repeat. you'll be able to get it to the point where you can see the froth of the fuel dissipating as it settles, literally only centimeters from the fuel tank mouth.

because diesel expands so little, apparently the only real things that one would be advised to do are, as per the club:

Topping up using the vent valve should be done only when the car will be driven long enough to consume a gallon or so before stopping the engine. Don't top off with the vent pressed and then park in the sun. For accurate fuel mileage calculations always use the same technique when re-fueling. Either always "top up" by venting the expansion chamber, or never vent and stop refilling when the dispensing nozzle shuts off. That extra half gallon or two liters of fuel squeezed into the expansion chamber will make the trip consumption appear higher if this venting technique is used intermittently.

if you couldnt be bothered with actually performing a ventectomy (my case, plus i wanted to keep vent intact just for if/when other people use my car) or you dont want to get too fiddly, venting manually is exactly the same result, just takes a little more time and a couple rubber gloves.

p.s. sorry if i put in alot of information that you guys already know, i was just covering all bases for anyone else who would come across this thread also.

Great info, thanks for that. Will give it a go on my next refuel.
So you reckon you can squeeze a couple more litres or more in the tank?

              you bet mate.

The gauge cluster in the polo is very simple- no digital fuel gauge or trip computer.

I still remember it- the first time i vented, i got 167 kms of mainly city driving BEFORE the fuel gauge needle dipped a tad below full (this is with chip, and thrashing the crap out of it once warm)

Its great stuff - especially since that now means 2 round trips to buller from st kilda on a 45ltr tank.

by the way, im not sure what its like on the golf but on the polo the vent button is at the three o clock position of the fuel tank mouth- id hazard a guess it would be either that, or nine o clock on the golf.

And in the polo the button just needs to be pressed down into the tank, like a tiny cylindrical lever- it doesnt take much pressure to push it.

You wont go through many gloves either- i now just withdraw the fuel nozzle and gently press the vent button with the tip of the nozzle. Bonza!

Too easy! Hopefully it's the same on the Golf.
