What's the most amount fuel you've put in your Golf?

Apologies in advance if this has been addressed on another forum. I had a bit of a search but there wasn't anything specific to the above question.
The only reason I ask is that my weekly commute is generally 1000-1050km which is always exactly 1 tank (trip computer 4.6l/100km but realistically just over 5l/100lm). When I say 1 tank it's seriously 1 tank, down to about 20km or less to empty. If I then pick up my son from daycare and go to the local BP to refill it's down to 0km which always gives me a pretty consistent fill of just under 54l which in turn leads me to believe that the DTE is quite accurate.
Has anyone filled more than 55l and if so how much did you manage to fit in?
Does the Golf have a reserve or is what you see on the DTE what you get?

It's not something I really want to push to find out but it's something i've been curious about since I got the car. Call it a psychological thing but I always feel better if I only have to fill up once a week even if it means running the fuel very low.
My mate has got a Hyundai i30 crdi which supposedly has a 56l tank and he consistantly gets 59-60l in it.
If anyone has pushed theirs beyond 0 DTE i'd love to know about (and more kudos to you )

i've only ever managed to put 54.5ish litres in my mk3 (supposed to have a 55l tank) and i hada couple of coughs during the last 20km.

there is a little knobby thing in the top of the filler neck that helps vent air from the filler neck when pushed in.... this usually allows you to squeeze in an couple more litres.

Similar for me (although around town I'll let it go down to the red light sometimes).

There is also a safety issue if you run out (or start getting air in the fuel lines) just when you need to accelerate to get out of the way of another vehicle which is approaching a bit faster than you expected.

My missus is a bit paranoid about running out of fuel ever since we ran out on the main tank on our Landcruiser just as a bush fire started to come near the road - I have never swapped tanks (push of a button) and reprimed the injector pump (lift bonnet and pump manual pump furiously) so fast in all my life ! Because we had two tanks I used to get a bit blase about swapping before the main ran out.

If you regularly run down to 0 Km DTE I suggest you carry a jerry can with at least 5 litres in it, then when you do run out you will be able to refill without too much drama (and you will then be able to calculate exactly how much it takes to fill your tank from true empty).

If it is that important to only fill once a week another solution is to plan your journeys a bit better and reduce your weekly mileage ?

I've driven till empty every time, and even a bit beyond. I've never put more than 53L in.

It's not vitally important, just one less thing I need to do if I can avoid it. As I said in my original piece, I usually get home with about 20km DTE so I don't leave myself critically short.
Mate, I live on the Gold Coast and work in Brisbane, I've got my route planning down to the nearest metre There's no sidetrips involved here until the end of my working week.

Yes, the fuel pump (fuel delivery pump) is in the fuel tank. It is cooled down by the surrounding fuel, so running on empty all the time is not very good for it especially in hot weather (I mean like some people buy fuel for $20 every week). I suggest that anyone who drives regularly to the empty gets familiar with how to get the engine running again after run out of diesel. Despite that some manuals may say just crank the engine until it starts it doesn’t start after 5s or 10s of cranking (it requires good and fully charged battery) and the fuel filter should be filled up with the fuel before you attempt to start up. So, carry some tools and handy little funnel with the hose to attach to the fuel filter with you for filling it up and to bleed the air out of it.

Looks like we all fill the same amount once the DTE gets very low. This is obviously much more accurate than the avg fuel consumption reading which is always about 10% optimistic. Don't want to make the same mistake with the fuel guage!

The one think you have to take onto equation also, is the error of the pump counter at the servo. I found it to be 50ml per L, of course – not + at many petrol stations.
I calculate the fuel consumption from the fuel docket. I would buy fuel at the different petrol stations until I found the one where I get the best fuel economy.

I had 40km left on the DTE and put in 52l Caltex for approx 800km previous. Thou the DTE changed from 60 to 20 depending on the loud factor driving to the cheap servo ... mmmm so 3l is still another 50kms.

Would the fuel pump sit in a sump such that its covered till ... 1l ?

On my golf 3 diesel i got 56 liters afew times.
that was right out empty.i get 1250kms on it around town,there is not much traffic on the hours im driving,and i drive it as economy as possible,that i know of.i like to have a golf 5 diesel but if i can custom build a bigger tank or maybe a extention next to it that will be great.i dont know why they reduced the tank size from 60lit on mark4 to about 54lit on mark 5 a little downsizing for whatever reason.

Ive got 57 lit in my golf 3 diesel a few times but that was right out empty.and it doese 1250kms around town,90% of it on no trafic times
i like to upgraid it to a mk5 2.0 manual diesel,but wondering if i can put a bigger tank or maybe a extention tank on it.i know a place who doese this stuff but not shore if the mk5 has the speace for it.i took my golf around australia last year and that few extra litters came handy.

Last week I put 57l in my Mk V GT Diesel. I was on my way to Brisbane, the DTE said 70km and the roadsign said 80km to Ballina. Unfortunately at 20km to Ballina the DTE said 0. I was a little concerned by then but thankfully made it to the servo OK.
