Some people like to live dangerously !

Do you know that it is NOT good for your fuel delivery system to run so low (not enough cooling diesel going through pumps etc), let alone run out completely ?

Not to mention the safety issue of running out of engine power on a section of road where there is nowhere to pull over out of the way of other traffic.
2017 MY18 Golf R 7.5 Wolfsburg wagon (boring white) delivered 21 Sep 2017, 2008 Octavia vRS wagon 2.0 TFSI 6M (bright yellow), 2006 T5 Transporter van 2.5 TDI 6M (gone but not forgotten).

On a trip to mt Gambier and back last year i ran it down to 0. and travelled 16km til i found a servo, i put 54.5l in then.

I dont normally run it right out, but i was determined to try and break the 1000km from a tank, both times i have tried i have failed, first time got 974 Port Fairy and back to the Shell at Westgate bridge via great ocean rd. and the Mt Gambier trip did 947 or something.

        ventectomy

My polo gets an extra 10L after venting (>52L into rated 45L tank). Presumably the Golf will too. Ventectomy is no problem for a diesel.

Ventectomy -- New guy\'s first mod! It took about 45 seconds. No, it's true! Less than a minute in below freezing temps. The photos posted in a thread on this subject were fantastic, and a tremendous help. I can't find the thread right now, but whoever posted the pics, I say THANKS! Greg

Rather than throw the vent parts out, I put the vent base through a few coils of spring so it doesn't seal but I don't have to keep the spare parts anywhere special.

        2011/11 Yeti 103 TDI 6M + Columbus media centre/satnav

i didnt know about this mod!

will do it sometime soon I think, the most i've ever got into a tank is 38L, but normally I just fill up at the 1/4 mark

one day when i get the lill bugger to race spec, Im going to put in a 80L fuel cell! That ought to give me some range!

Bang for buck, it's the coolest/quickest/cheapest/most useful mod ever. There are detailed instructions for several different models around on tdiclub and elsewhere. New beetles are trickiest. Polo is easy. Main trick is not breaking the little plastic clip/tab that holds the white vent body in. Once you've seen what it looks like it's easier. The fuel flap housing is a bit fiddly first time.

After ventectomy, you can hear air escaping from vent during fill. Last 10L is a little slower.

(Can achieve same effect with more effort by manually pushing the vent button several times during each fill.)

No links to Polo ventectomy - no polos in US market.

Just follow the golf pics on previous post - vent on Polo is towards front rather than rear. (The shape of the catch is visible on the Golf photos - small ramp catch on small plastic tab.) Just need a stubby screwdriver to gently push down the ramp a little while pushing the vent button to the front of the car to pop out the mechanism. I think the vent release catch is then on top rather than underneath. Otherwise same as Golf ventectomy.

Don't need to buy one. Others just delete those three parts - collar, spring, button.

(But if you really want it surely you can find it....in the direction the spring shot it out.)

I've been averaging about 7L/100km overall in a mixture of city and freeway driving. The general trend appears to be going down - at least I hope it is and should be.

                        Well...yes

As a shopping trolley, it gets closer to 8. On the freeway 5-5.5. Those overall figures are based on fuel litres consumed and not the optimistic computer.

I get similar figures to you Bluey. If I'm in stop-start traffic, even worse.

I thrash the GT pretty relentlessly though.

                              This is sensational.
Don't know why I haven't read about this earlier. Has anyone done this to their Golf? if so, how much extra fuel have you managed to fit it?
Also, are their any issues to be aware of once venting is done i.e does the trip computer take issue with the extra fuel on board in terms of it's calculations? How about the filling up process itself?

                              Cheers
