Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Chasing a 1.9 AHU or ALH tdi engine and 5 speed.

Hi all. Very quick question. Was the 1.9 Tdi engine (codes AHU, ALH or 1Z) ever available here in Australia? If so what was it in as I’m chasing one! Cheers for now.

PS, I tried to post this in the wanted section but it keeps asking for a thread prefix. No idea what that is or where I find it!

There was a 1.9 TDI available in the Mk5 Golf & models of the Caddy. I don't remember what size in the Polo, could have been the 1.6.
I know the 1.9 was available in the UK Polo as I saw them in 1997 while visiting. I never bothered with the prefix codes but some of the VW wreckers would know.

Both the mentioned options are common rail. I’m trying to keep away from that. The last of the Mk3’s had the Tdi I’m after… Apparently they were very low in numbers here.

That is true. At the time ,I was interested until I heard the price of $35k. VW had trouble selling them in Aust., so they dropped the price to from memory around $30k or just over to clear their stock & they sold very quickly.

I can't answer your question but I know why you want one. Check out the 2nd best German engine of all time.
