Not sure if this might help, or you have comment to add. I am up for my 24 month/30k service.

I have been told this is fluids, cabin filter and brake fluid flush. Current quotes are below.

There's a certain manufacture date where it changed to 3 years until change 1 then every 2 years after that. Maybe this is one of them?

I'm convinced they changed it to appease the fleet buyers overseas so that they don't have to get it done during a normal lease period.

CAbin filter should be done every 12 months in AU (my opinion)

Both of mine were done after 2 years in the 30,000k service

However you may well be correct as this from the UK VW site for Sirrocos

Why does my brake fluid need to be changed?

Brake fluid must withstand operating temperatures of up to 230°C but over time absorbs water which boils at 100°C. As the water boils, it turns to compressible vapour which means you won't be able to brake as efficiently.

What happens if it's not changed?

If too much moisture builds up, the brake fluid can boil while you're braking, seriously affecting performance. It can cause the brakes to fail. A spongy feel to the brake pedal shows you this has started to happen.

What do we do?

We check the level and look for leaks. We drain the system and fill it with new brake fluid. We test the system and record it in your service book.

How often should it be changed?

At year 3 and every 2 years after that

It's only recent Hillbilly. More for marketing than sound technical reasons IMO.

The brake fluid water level tester could be used to test the brake fluid for the water content. I found that in SA the brake fluid has less than 1% of water or 0% water after 2 years. The 3% is still okay, more than that is "Not Ok - Fail".

I personally would stick with 2-3 years interval, but I can see this to be changed to monitor only and change as needed due to the low cost saving pushing ahead.

Do you think there's a difference in water content between the MC and the calipers?

I've got to admit that when I started there was NO recommended flush period from any of the manufacturers I worked with (BMC, Land Rover, Holden, Ford, Chrysler, etc) and it wasn't a common thing to flush the brakes unless you'd cracked into the hydraulics. This probably why you heard so many horror stories about people driving down Mt Ousley (it drops about 300m in 5km).

Actually, the Chryslers never had an issue because they usually came from the holding yard with leaking rear brake cylinders. It became part of our pre-registration check (they'd already had PD at the dealers) to pull the back wheels off & have a look.


Back (slightly) on topic, it's interesting to note how many of the brake fluid manufacturer websites still recommend the thicker DOT 4 rather than the correct, less viscous stuff (ISO 4925 class 6). In fact, several of them don't even know the class 6 standard exists.
