You'd struggle to get near that without a tune. High-powered FWD cars can be a pain to launch hard at the best of times too.

Stock, you should be able to manage fairly consistent mid 5s if you've got a good technique.

    • yeah/no, sorry it wasn't 100% clear. I know it won't go near that time standard. When I said 'ultimately' I meant when I'm finished modding it. will probably only ever go as far as tune/CAI/exhaust of some kind/HPFP etc. nothing too serious.

      • ok, I tried the launch control and yes it works fine on the rocco.

        what I did.

drove car till oil temp was up around 80c.

        came to a complete stop.
put suspension in sport (not sure if this is needed for the LC though)
held down ESP button for 5 seconds (ESP light comes up on dash)
        put trans into S mode
        left foot on brake
right foot on accelerator (flat to the floor)
the engine came up to between 3,000 and 3,200rpm and held there
when ready you just step off the brake and away she goes.

I found it actually launched very nicely with no wheel spin BUT as the engine hits peak torque then it starts some pretty severe wheel spin and you need to either pluck 2nd gear or feather the throttle a bit.

I think you need to do the little procedure each time you want to do a LC. I went down the road and came to a stop and tried to just do it and with foot on brake as I put my foot on the accelerator it started to fight against the brake. so I stopped, did the procedure again and it worked fine. as I expected launch rpm is a lot lower than the AWD models which is exactly what you want.

I sometimes launch it, then cruise in D/S, then pop it back into "manual" and LC works just fine without having to re-activate everything else. I pop second gear almost right away and launches pretty hard with only the slightest sound of tyre squeal. I've only done a tune (GIAC).
Scirocco R. Rising blue. Black tallies. Thumbs up.

Nah, you don't need this. The ACC/DCC system is entirely separate.

The initial launch is the DSG slipping the clutch, allowing what it estimates to be the correct amount of torque for the available grip to be transferred to the wheels. But that only lasts for a second or so and, as you say, once the clutch bites and the torque is no longer restricted (you're already past peak torque by 3000rpm), you'll get some wheelspin shenanigans unless you modulate the throttle carefully.

It can be very difficult to get the process smooth; I've done it a few times in my GTI, measuring with a GTech Pro SS (GPS accelerometer), and although the starts with little to no wheelspin feel slow, they tend to yield the quickest times. It just takes patience to prevent getting carried away before you've got enough traction!

                      • Superb bonnet Kevin, I guess you wrapped it also? I always have a (sounds silly) question how the water drain system works on it.

Thanks it is a genuine Carbon Fiber item from Volkswagen Motorsport off their GT24 cars. I find that if you drive fast enough the water doesn't get in. LOL. In all seriousness its just evaporates anyway.
