Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

I'm on the hunt for some snow chains for the Multivan.

The local SuperCheapAuto have some for ~$200 (can't find a link).
EDIT: From memory this looks like them: SNOW CHAINS 4WD 16 17 18" WHEELS AUTOTECNICA VW Multivan Caravelle CA400

Thule have a set which is almost twice that:
    Thule XS-16 230-235

    What do people recommend?

If it has an engine or heartbeat it's going to cost you.

here's some general (and sometimes cynical) discussion on chains at another forum I participate in.

      Snow chains, Q & A for 2015

If you are planning on going to Hotham, be cautious with your choice as Hotham seem to have their own standards/requirements the rest of the world cant meet

        So how did they go?
How were they to put on?
        How much?

I know it snowed in queensland last week, but aren't you getting a bit carried away?

I'm learning all sorts of things... Like how places don't allow snow socks
From what I gather Mt Hotham is the most strict but diamond pattern, non Aldi, chains are the go. The V2 range is what it looks like I'll be getting from a local supplier here is Melbourne as they are apparently decent and allowed everywhere.

I never got to use them as Mt Buller was clear. I did practice putting them on and they are very easy to fit.

Bought the snow socks for when we went to perisher last year. Didnt have to use them in the end although it was touch and go on the day we left. A good thing to have in your back pocket in case you need it.

Diamond pattern chains are now mandatory for all vehicles entering the Mount Hotham Alpine Resort. Ladder chains, spider chains and snow socks are not permitted to be used at any time.
