wheels are 16x7.5 front and 16x8.5 at the back. no coilovers yet but yes back wheel just hits the spring on the shock and i thought with coilover the springs are smaller in diameter and it could possibly clear it. tyres that i am looking at this stage are 195/40/16 all around . i know this is hard to do and i never done it before but my question was do you gain more space with coilovers at the back to clear?

nope, with coilovers youll have alot less clearance, because the coil spring goes all the way down past the top of the wheel... you loose about another 15-20mm of inner clearance, and 16x8.5! i honestly will say goodluck mate, bot those wheels arnet going on without some spacers and alot of body work

no issues with front they are 7.5, but issues with the rear 8.5 i can bolt the wheel on and spin it but need more clearence.look at my photos please i will make my question simple: are the spring on coilovers smaller in diameter then standard spring on the back.from photos i have seen they look at lot smaller but need to confirm this and find out if they sizes vary from brand to brand.spacers are my last option but will use if need be.thank you

but it aint going to be easy! goodlucksigpic

To me a 15x8 et25 is way too much on a mk1 & you end up with all sorts of problems.
Especially if the mk1 is going to be low, you need to do more than just "roll" the guard lips. You need a pump them hard!
Even a 15x7 et25 the rims sticks out of the front guard & that's with a GTI wheel arch flare on.
Then add in another .5" each side!
Also, if fitting a 15x8 et25 with coilovers, you will need a spacer which again push's the wheel out further again!
I've been down this road many a time now & have had alot of different setups over the years incl. a 15x7 ET25 using coilovers & they only "just" cleared, but they did stick out alittle past the flare.
One thing I have noticed in "wheel size/offset" threads. Not one person ever talks about the back of the rim spoke/hub profile.
On a the front of a mk1 & alot of other euro cars, the brake caliper sticks out past the hub/wheel mounting surface, so you need a rim/spoke rear profile that allows it to clear the caliper.
I've noticed that alot of rims suited for cars like gemini's, toyotas etc have a flat backed spoke/hub arrangement, which doesn't clear the caliper at all & the rim just jams against it = no rotation
Hope this may help.
I'll go through it again for you, just in case you didn't read my original post & this will be the last time & the rest is up to you.
Take it or leave it from someone who has actually been down this road the expensive way!
I've had (yes I HAD!, no opinions, or what I think will or won't work or "I read this & that" like some others) ET25 on a 15x7 with these coilovers. The rim was very close to the spring, but didn't hit on both the front & the back. Along with several (heaps!) of other different rims sizes, tyres, offsets suspension setups etc
I'm talking from a coilover fitted point of view.
Fronts
Now. Your going 7.5 on the front & they'll clear with a standard shock setup. But...
I wouldn't be suprised once you fit the coilovers, either they will hit or you'll have to run nearly 0 camber to clear as it will be very close if not rubbing on the front springs.
Back
Your going 8.5 on the back. I'm pretty confident it will rub on the spring, as the rim will be moved approx another 20mm inwards & I can remember, I didn't have that much clearance with my 7" ET25. It was only something like 10-15mm on the coilover.
So from where I sit, you will need to space the rims out to clear both the front & rear coilover springs
Oh, & you will have a stupid amount of trouble with guard clearance
Heres my coilover setup
This is fitted with 16x6 195/45R16 tyres, ET30-32 with H&R adapters & I had to cut the crap out of the guards to go this low!
I also ran nearly 2 degree of negative camber & it only had a whisker of clearance to the front springs. The back was fine
Now look at the above pic & your going another
Front
13mm towards the front spring
25mm towards the guard. ( I should say outside the guard!)
Back
25.7mm towards the rear spring
37.7mm towards/outside the rear guard
Like I said.
Take it or leave it.
P.S. Lawny. Dom actually rings me before he buys any rims for any of his cars for me to work out if it will or won't work.
but he went out on his own with his 8" rear RS' & I warned him it would be crap & sure enough. It was terrible.

i am not on +25 offset. i have purchased different wheels. as i said no problems at the front with coilovers or witout plenty of clearance. my question is about the back wheel 16 x 8.5. as far as i know and i did check on all 3 mk1 that i have in front off my house spring sits lower thank top of the tyre and top of the wheel(again nothing to do with the front i am talking about the rear.) complete different to the front, the spring is longer and that is standard set up.
my question was about coilover spring size difference in diameter to the standard ones in the back and are all coilovers same size springs. i am sorry about confusion i need advise and any is welcome.
quote
They are smaller, but the rear springs on the standard gear sit above the tyre. Coilover springs sit lower, down past the lip of the wheel. That's why you have LESS clearance with coilovers.
Prenn59 i think you are wrong here beacouse rear spring on standard sits lower, down past the lip of the wheel

I think you need to start another thread outlining your question more clearly, without the confusion of the +25ET you began referring to.
It is clear people are willing to help you, but you need to also help yourself. Please read the responses above as the questions that you have had are answered in the posts by golfworx and wabit.Last edited by mikinoz; 15-12-2009, 10:02 PM.
