  • Getting wheel weights off

    How can you get this POS wheel weights off a rim?




    They are clipped around the edge of a rim like hook and are a PITA to take off as I need to polish them up...

    pliers would be my first guess, but why not just cruise past the local tyre place and either ask them how, or ask them nicely to take them off. If your a regular they will do it for free konwing you'll be coming back for the tyres anyway.

    If it has an engine or heartbeat it's going to cost you.

      I'll have a go with the pliers, I honestly cbf driving to Moorebank and back to take weights off as I had already gone there to separate the tires from the rims .

      The wheels are so spotless its not funny, no curbage on a single rim and I'd just hate to ruin them further by violently trying to pry a wheel weight off...

          Try from the inside of the rim if you can. Get long nose pliers and pry it out then bend it over the top curve of the wheel?

            I'll try a thinner head screwdriver, the fatter one didn't work well, my dad is here now so I hope he can help me, if he ever stops eating that is.

            Lol Mickey, thank you for the kind words but I can see you know as well as me how difficult these stupid weights will be to remove, at least it'll be worth it...

              What you talkin bout Houso I know everything there is to know about anything!

              Surely it's simple enough to pry off, even with a flathead?

                Well dad just took them off for me with an antediluvian looking hammer and a piece of wood!

                He just hit the curved inside edge with the wood and hammer and the lead weight along with its clip just popped off. I also noticed that this type of weight chews up the rim when its put on as its forced on with the crescent clip, thankfully they're only a 6 inch rim with negative stretch (is that a term?) and will never been seen anyway...

                  Nah the clip was that close to the rim you couldn't pry it off, although you could have also hit the circular hole in the back of clip until it came out with chisel or screwdriver, although the brute force + chunk of wood method worked well in the end...

                    You take them off with a weight removal pliers. There's a pointy bit that goes into the hole on the clip & you remove them by levering from the outside towards the inside.
                    A decent tyre place wouldn't charge a cent to remove them as long as you said please & thanks. If they want to charge you then they obviously don't want you coming back later to spend decent $$$.

                    When you remount your tyres, tell them you don't want outside weights & they will use stick-ons on the inner rim
