  • Fitting out Mk6 Golf with Nav / Bluetooth / Reverse Cam in VIC

    Hi Guys,

Recently picked up a 2010 Golf GTI in VIC. It has the standard RDC510 only with no MDI, no park sensors and basic bluetooth (answer and hangup calls only).

I want to add Navigation, full bluetooth phone integration including music streaming and OEM fit reverse camera. I'm really confused about the way to go about this and would appreciate some advice or a shop in Melbourne South East that can quote me. I use the car for work so looking for a solution with full integration.

    Thanks!

Bluetooth is easy - you need the premium 9w7 bluetooth box that goes under your seat. Should simply be a case of unplugging the current Bluetooth unit (assuming its the standard basic VW optioned Bluetooth) under your seat, and plugging the new one in.

RNS510 is worth a fair bit of coin, and isn't a very good unit (slow and clunky and old design). Personally i didn't option the RNS in my car as i didn't see the value of it - but up to you.

OEM reverse camera is something i wish i had optioned (only $500 option) when i ordered my Golf R, and always regretted not having it. Reversing at night is not easy in that car, especially with the woeful reverse light VW give you. Fitting a reverse camera aftermarket is somewhat involved and requires a fair bit of interior dismantling. Not a terribly hard job, just expensive and time consuming.

If you are going to pay someone to install all this gear - you will be paying a pretty penny. OEM parts plus installation will probably see you around $3-4k.

thanks yeah costing the parts from the supplied website looks too costly for my wallet. So will need to rethink

Think I will keep the rds510 and skip the Nav do the Bluetooth upgrade and see what is left for reversing cam. Also noticed they have an OPS sensor kit. I would prefer this to the cam but didn't think it could be retro fit has anyone tried installing this aftermarket?

Go the reverse camera over the OPS kit. I had the OPS kit in my Golf R and they were annoying whereas the reverse camera is quite useful.

It is an expensive setup, but what you originally proposed is exactly what I had done to my MkV Pirelli, and I couldn't be happier. The pop-up reversing camera is great (although this is a MkVI product, so some modification was required) and bluetooth pretty near perfect. With respect to the comment above about the RNS-510 being slow, old and clunky, that is true to a point, but it is also so well integrated into the car, that after my very extensive research, it was my best and favourite option. YMMV, but don't discount the RNS-510, which you can sometime find for sale on forums like this for much cheaper than retail or even grey-market, and so much the better if you are competent enough to install it yourself.

              Thanks,

Installing the unit or blutooth module is not an issue, I would prefer the camera to be installed by someone else however, mainly because I'm time poor and fairly unlucky in these things and always losing a screw or snapping a piece.

I did see Blaupunkt have a RNS-510 clone the Philadelphia 835 looks like a competent unit with Blutooth on board and will let me run external amps via a preout rather then off the speaker outputs. I will still need the OEM camera however, but i value this feature as currently our family car has it and if you get lazy it is easy to back out with out looking when driving the 2nd car.

Also lots of Chinese branded replicas with Andriod but I'm not much of a tinkerer and value sound quality over lots of functions. the build quality would concern me also

would be interested if anyone has any experience with any of the above

Ah, yes; so I guess the Sydney possibility fell through too...

...but you got a MkVI GTI instead, which is a very worthy alternative, and a year and one generation younger too - but, as I have found, those add-ons can certainly add up. If you want someone to do the installation, I second the recommendation for VW Central, but just make sure you are happy with everything before you drive out the door.

I see there are now two yellow four-doors on Carsales.com, but still close to $20K.

No didn't work out, but wrapped with the Mk6 is in great condition. Did you buy the parts from VW central?

Yes, and VW Central (sort of) fitted them too. A few overhangs from that transaction remain, but in conversation with Dean (the proprietor) the other day, he says that he has fixed those issues. If you do use him, please let him know I referred you, as I am trying to do some more complicated business with him, and I like him to know I'm thinking of him. Again, this is not a cheap proposition, but he did give me the best deal of the four companies I sought quotes from.

Correction: there is one now, as one has been sold.

Thank you, I (Dean) really appreciate your kind words. We want to look after this community, since this is why began our business. Like you all, we got sick of paying high prices for local stock, and only use Genuine VW parts, not bashing any companies here, but please double check when you ask for a quote that you are in fact getting the Genuine VW retrofit kit you require as it is very easy to get caught up into aftermarket cameras, bluetooth modules which are much cheaper in nature.

We also got sick of being told options that were available from factory cannot be added to a vehicle at a later stage, everything is possible providing you have the correct parts.

We have created a thread: Feedback, Reviews & Complaints and would love to hear from any of you who have dealt with us.

We are a transparent company, if anyone has an issue or a compliment for us, please do post in the thread, by doing so your experience (good/bad) will help others make an informed decision
