  • Map updates for 2016 Discover media free?

    Hi All,
Just ordered a MY2016 Tiguan for delivery at the end of this year.
The 2016MY has the Composition Media standard and the Discover Media with SatNav available as an upgrade, in place of the standard RCD510 and upgrade RNS510 in the MY2015 Tiguans.

I'm tempted to upgrade to the Discover Media to get the SatNav package as it's only a $950 upgrade, but I don't want to be locked into expensive annual updates of maps.

So my question is - does anyone know if the map updates are free on the Discover Media Package, or do they have to be purchased? The dealer can't answer the question at the moment but is looking into it, so I thought someone on here might have the answer in the meantime.

    Thanks.

    What updates?

I have a 2013 unit and so far there have been no updates for it other than a half-hearted fix for the lousy voice.

There has been just one for the 2014 unit that won't work on the older one — so far as I know it's the only update, and it can be had free.

Save your money — get a TomTom or similar with better maps and regular updates.

Yeah I hear what you're saying Idle, and I don't know what mapping system came in 2013/14 models, but the 2016 apparently uses the NavTeq system, which I'm familiar with as 'Here Maps' on my Nokia phone (Nokia bought NavTeq in 2011) and quite like the way it works, and get updates every twelve months or so.

Meanwhile I've heard back from the dealer that VW are expected to provide free updates for the first five years if you service the vehicle at a dealer. He stressed this isn't for certain yet as details are rather sketchy, and I'll have to wait until VW officially launch it's 'MapCare' program in Oz before I can know for sure.

Anyway, on the basis of that I've ordered the SatNav upgrade to the Tiguan. The fact it's only $950 to upgrade compared to $2,500 for the same upgrade in the MY2015 makes it a much easier choice, even if I do end up paying a few bucks for the map updates.

My maps are Navteq, so far as I know and so far there's been no indication of any updates (for the euro maps, yes, and they're free to download, for the ROW maps, zilch, not even for money (not that I'd pay for them anyway — paid enough already...))

My Nokia phone has the same maps (though called Drive/Here on the phone) and has automatically updated the Oz maps a couple of times in the two years I've had it, so there's definitely updates available. I guess the question is how to get them onto the car system as it's not internet connected.

On that point, the dealer I've just ordered my Tiguan from says they get a map update CD from VW about once a year which fits the RNS510, and they use it to update customer's maps automatically along with the annual service, or on request at other times. They do it for free for their customers ( ie people who get their services done at the dealer), though he said that some other dealers charge about $50 for the update.

Apparently things will be a bit different with the new Discover media/satellite system arriving on the 2016 models because that doesn't have a hard drive like the RNS510 to store the maps on. It uses an SD card instead, and he's not sure how the map updates will be provided.

Discovery and Discovery Pro map updates have been spoken about on this link http://www.vwwatercooled.com/forums/...discovery+maps
VW Australia is not supporting map updates yet but if you look a bit over to the other side of the pacific they will help.

Only problem:- These maps don't work on the first version unit — still no map updates for 2012/13 units.

Looks like there'll never be. Can't help feeling ripped off.

Have tried using a V3 SD card, part number may be 5G0919866F but you will need to confirm this with the parts people.
