  • Bluetooth and MDI problems. RCD310 upgrade?

    Hi all,

Just picked up a 132 Tiguan for the folks. Mum has found that the Bluetooth on her iPhone can only play songs through Bluetooth but cannot change songs or pause etc from the multifunction steering wheel. Song name doesn't show on the mfd or head unit either, not sure if it's supposed to? Phone calls can be answered though.

Decided to try the MDI which doesn't work at all, it charges the phone but says accessory is not supported (iPhone) and the popup stays there for at least 10-20 presses before it goes away, which is weird.

I did a bit of googling and found other people have this problem as well. Is this due to the phone or the head unit? Or even MDI/Bluetooth?

Is there a way this can be fixed? So songs can be changed via the steering wheel or head unit so the phone can just not be touched. Would be good if the MDI worked in that regard too.

If so, would an RCD510 be the answer? As there is no need for GPS. If I were to pick up an RCD510 is it just a straight swap? No issues of can bus and battery drain?

    Thanks

Guessing you have the RCD310. I have the RCD510 and it works with my iPhone4S though isn't perfect.

You can skip songs, displays title and artist but can't fast forward through a track - you have to do this on the phone.

The latest Bosch units (5K0 035 190 A or B) will display the artist name and song title and will allow you to skip tracks in the same album as Tigger 73 says but you cannot change folders via the BT option you must use the MDI option to do this.
If you want to upgrade to a RCD 510 make sure it is one of the 2 models mentioned above. Older 5K0 035 190 or 3C8 035 190 Bosch units will not be compatible with the BT unit already in the Tiguan. (The older units do not read the telephone book correctly.)
Do not even bother with the RCD 510's made in China by Delphi they do not support any phone functions but do have a RVC input if you want to install a rear view camera and a built in MDI iPod connection which is irrelevant as you have a MDI already.

You will have no issues with a CANbus or battery drain but the unit may need to be recoded to display a Tiguan outline if you have OEM parking sensors fitted as std instead of an Amarok or Passat which most second hand Bosch units appear to come out of these days.

You do however need the proper MDI cable which is NOT the one that normally comes with the car as as you say it only charges the phone.

Thanks for all your help. Currently the MDI doesn't work at all and the Bluetooth works like the AUX input, only playing songs nothing else, no track information, no pausing, changing songs etc.

I'll look at the option you listed above for the RCD510.

If the car has factory front and rear park sensors will this still show on the new head unit? Any vcds coding required? Or is this something best left done by a professional? I changed the rcd500 to the 510 in my mkv golf with no problems so I was hoping it would be the same but I just remembered about the parking sensors and diagram on the display (which my car doesn't have).

P.s. So regular USB phone cable doesn't work? Is there a specific cable I should be buying?

          Thanks again

Be careful if you go to RCD510 as it has a separate Bluetooth module whereas the 310 has it built in ......... I think !!!

Rcd310 does not have an inbuilt BT unit. the factory fitted BT unit on Aus spec Tiguans is mounted in a foam cover under the driver's seat and since the intro of the Facelifted Tiguans in late 2011 has been the 9W7 premium units which retail on eBay for around $300 plus. The cheaper 9W2 units with no phone book or dialing options suitable for the older VW's with the red MFD retail for around 80 to $110 on eBay pending on whether you buy it with a plug and play cable, foam cover or the basic cable which requires the installer to splice 4 wires into the CANbus and power connections.

I concur with hillbilly get yourself an MDI cable suitable for an iPhone 4/4S off eBay for about $20. It was the first thing I bought when I got the Second Tiguan. Still cannot understand why VWA does not sell the car with only the USB cable. This will solve half your problems.
PS it will also work perfectly with the iPhone 5 providing you have the OEM Apple adapter
