Yeah the inbuilt Mic is always a problem. Dunno why the don't put a 3.5mm Jack on the back of these so you can use your own external mic if you want. And they are always mount them on the left of the unit for those that drive from the wrong side of the car.
The upsides greatly out way the downs though. Interface is fast and fluid. Access to the play store for apps. Nav software is much better than vw. Sound quality is good.

After seeing your youtube video review of the head unit I am considering purchasing one for my golf mk5 2006. Looks like a great product all round. I would be purchasing this from the same guy you got yours on ebay. Did you need to use a canbus adapter to connect this? Unlike yours, my golf doesn't have any buttons on the steering wheel. The seller told me this can be provided at an additional cost but i'm not sure if i need this. I have a 2006 Golf mk5 1.4 Petrol. I was told this would be necessary to prevent battery drain. Any updates and taughts on the unit after having it for a while? Just waiting for some feedback from you before i go ahead and buy it ! thanks

I might be wrong, but you'll probably need a canbus decoder/adapter that suits the golf to enable reverse camera, allow unit to stay on after key turn off? At least i'm hoping that's what my canbus decoder will do once it arrives... supplier sent me the wrong one first time around and i had ghetto modded a harness to enable power and acc so i could start using the unit.

Yes the canbus controller is used for sensing reverse and for allowing for a timed shutdown as mentioned. Both work well in my MkV, as well as the steering wheel controls.

Hey guys - seems there's heaps of confusion (and pages...) on XDA with updating and rooting - what version FW/SW are you using and do you till have root? I'm still on supplied and un-modded FW but don't know to root first or update?

Rooting is on the backburner for me for now but it just seems like you need to manually install su before you start. If you update I think you lose root so don't bother until you are up to date. I have latest on there, that's what mine shipped with.

I'm on 2.9.2 and still have root. FW wise I'm on number 15,just updated through model select in extra menu after updating software. I'll attach picture later on.

Will have to give it a try when I get a chance later this week. I believe root has been retained on 2.7.11 and even 2.7.22 the 4.2.2 version I think

Haven't seen 4.2.2 links yet but haven't looked that hard. I'm not messing with the interface at this point so not pursuing root. Have an audio issue with primo that I need to resolve first.
Otherwise very happy with the unit. I hope they implement bt avhcp 1.3 in the new version for artist/track info when streaming audio from your phone. I know this is available in the AOSP roms generally like cyanogen
