  • Project Mk5 GTI Android head unit WIP

    Work in progress:
After looking around at RNS510 upgrades and DNS options, I must admit I'm an android geek and really want it in a 2 DIN solution.

So looking at this option due to the XDA community support:
Capacitive Pure Android 4 1 2DIN CAR Radio DVD Player 3G Wifi GPS Navigation FM | eBay

Looks like it would need a face plate adapter and maybe some other bits and pieces, no idea at all as I've just bought the Golf!!!!!

So if I go complete alternate head unit, what gear do I need to hook into the Canbus system etc - or is there a decent head unit already designed for VW without adapters and running decent spec?

Any info would be great guys.
    Great forum.
    Cheddo.

    Yay,
No faceplate adapter - VW specific:
ANDROID4 1 Muti Touch 3G Wifi GPS VW DVD Player Jetta Touran Polo Amarok Camera | eBay

Have asked for Canbus addition detail.
    Will advise...

I call bull**** on their adaptor being special (although I'd consider it anyway) I do wonder if it uses it's own dedicated connection or uses bluetooth or Wifi?

But as long as it's got bluetooth or WiFi there are plenty of adaptors which should works just fine. That said I'd be thinking through just what you want to connect to it on the assumption it's only 1 x WiFi and 1 x Bluetooth you probably want the bluetooth for your phone and maybe the WiFi to feed the unit internet via a WiFi dongle or your tethered phone. It says it supports 3G via a dongle... but How and Where does that work? Does it then require a dedicated SIM card? (and if so are you willing to keep your car fed with a spare SIM?)

Of course I suppose if you get a WiFi OBDII dongle you could connect that when wanting to use those features (which would be most of the time) then flick over to your internet connection when you want that... of course it's a bit of a pain

If it has an engine or heartbeat it's going to cost you.

Awesome - they have stock of the Canbus and OBD2 adapter so have ordered the lot.
Seller was very quick to respond and easy to deal with.
        Work in progress........

Mate I've jumped in ready to tackle these issues!
Happy to report and do a review once received.
Need to read up on how to carefully dismantle the top and front surround soon I suppose!

Me too. Will need a replacement for the old wince system in my wife's car which is a bit flaky and slow.

Looks like the latest firmwares are available and other VW users have installed:

Bugger - just got news from eBay seller CANBUS is not in stock but will be in 10 days, not keen to do separate installs so said just deliver the lot as one package.

10 days isn't long to wait, but if you wanted to do it separately the radio is probably the easiest thing to get in and out anyway

Counting down the days, I have my unlocked Optus 4G mifi router I'm thinking of putting in the glovebox (running a prepaid Telstra 12 month data SIM) and hooking up a USB hub into the glovebox for hot-swappable devices.

It's at the post office. Got no time until at least Friday night to start the install. Long week. Aargh.

                          Its in!
Took around an hour to do, following the guide and YouTube link here:

Installing an Aftermarket Head Unit in Your MKV - EVERYTHING You Need to Know - VW GTI Forum / VW Rabbit Forum / VW R32 Forum / VW Golf Forum - Golfmkv.com

Haven't hooked up the reverse camera as yet, but everything else functioning 100%.
                          First reactions are extremely positive.
Stock firmware and os is fast and responsive, gps signal locks in almost immediately, inbuilt microphone seems to cope with hands free calls. Radio signal is perfect, and 4g connection to my mifi adapter in the glovebox works a treat.
Will get some time on Saturday to post a YouTube review.
Such a cool gadget to have in your dash - I love it!

                              Thanks for the review.
When you get a chance would you mind showing us the BT/phone book interface, and commenting on call quality etc?
Also the default music player interface?
Out of curiosity are you able to estimate the data usage that Waze would generate in perhaps hourly use?
