Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Sensis supply the maps for RNS510 and earlier, the current one is from Europe somewhere — hence the speech problems etc.

Appropos of your mystery about the supplier of the maps on the Golf SATNAV, I think that I can recall one of the esteemed moderators on this forum (I think it may even have been a Super moderator) saying that the company was SENSIS.

Good luck with your new car - you will find it an absolute delight to drive
Thanks DV52 for your kind remarks. Yes, Sensis certainly did provide maps for many satnavs in the past. This is the Sensis that has just been 70% sold off by Telstra and which also produces the Yellow Pages and White Pages phone books. Their mapping operation has its roots in the UBD street directory business.

I now believe the VW satnav maps / software come from the Navteq / NNG operation. On viewing the European VW map update site, I see that the site functionality is identical to the Hyundai one. Only the branding is different. Anybody with a recent Golf Highline should be able to see confirmation of the origin of their maps by using the satnav menu. Can someone please look under "Help/About" or "information" or "Licence details" or similar in the menu and report what they see there?

Flight: The "version information" from my NATSAV says the following"
5GO919866A 022 ROW 2013 (not sure if the third letter is a number, or a letter)
Means absolutely nothing to me, but doubtless someone in the know can find the meaning of life in these numbers!
Please don't PM to ask questions about coding, or vehicle repairs. The better place to deal with these matters is in the forum proper. That way you get the benefit of the wider expertise of other forum members! Thank you.

It means just as much or little to me DV52, so we'll both wait for that someone in the know. There will be an answer at some time.

Flight: My self confessed ignorance (about the number having meaning) was said somewhat tongue-in-cheek. I'm fairly certain that "5G" relates to the chasis platform type for the mk7 (a sticker with the number 5G is pasted on the passenger side of my car). "2013" is obviously the version year. My guess is that "ROW" means "Rest of World" which appears to confirm VW's long held view that Germany and the Sun inhabit a not dissimilar place in the universe. The rest of the numbers are a mystery that only the sage druids at VWWatercooled can decipher! I'm sure that your call-to-alms has initiated a flurry of activity amongst these alchemists!

We need to look at the Sat Nav as two elements that work together. The first element is the system software that operates the sat nav and contains the routing algorithms an the voice annunciation. My version number is the same as already posted. The second element are the maps. If you take the sat nav SD card out you will find a version number on it. Mine is version 1. Has any one got version 2 of the maps?

DV52 Your knowledge is indeed impressive! Taking your description on board, that string of code looks like some sort of VW part or reference number for the unit. There must also be a way to find out the map and software versions. On my non-VW unit this is achieved by holding down the settings button for 10 seconds. This causes all manner of details to be listed on the screen. Is there an equivalent function available on your satnav?

Maybe another avenue to reveal the inner secrets of this mysterious device is a file listing of the SD card. Anybody game to provide one here?

Flight: such dogged determination! Sounds like you are on a crusade. You against the forces of evil and badness!
Thought I would send you the pic below. It's the sleeve cover for the SATNAV CD Card that I got when the car was delivered. If you have it already, my apology. I hope that you can make-out the name NAVTEQ and some other numbers on the mid LHS of the pic.

What isn't promising is it says it incorporates data from Telstra which is copyright 2011 (Sensis map data) which would tend to indicate the maps might be a bit stale...
But what is more promising is the mention of Intellimatics AKA SUNA which should mean that the TMC keys are installed with the SDCARD...
Is there anyone in Sydney with a Discover Media system they can let me take a look at their coding and the card contents?

DV52 - Yes, my determination springs from a very sub-standard satnav experience in my current car. Once bitten etc..
Your sleeve cover picture is indeed interesting and all but confirms that the same culprits are responsible. It is good to shine some light on the issue and thanks to you for doing so.

kamold - Anything you could further establish from a look at the card contents will certainly help to build a complete picture of this satnav offering.

                      Well done guys.

I've taken a look at contents and no TMC files other than icons for various events.

Gee. That's disappointing, but unsurprising. Is there any progress with any other functionality? For example the text to speech pronunciation issue?

                                I don't have a Golf 7 so I can't help there.
