  • What is my Navigation System saying to me??

    Guys,

We have a MK6 GTD with the Navigation system and besides the fact she talks a bit too fast she keeps saying something like "Turn left to dulmigson" or something like that. It doesn't matter where we have told her to go she says this quite a bit. Just be nice to know if someone else has this issue?

Another issue is every now and then there will be a beep type tone that comes from the speakers. We have bluetooth streaming going normally. Any ideas?

If it's not already done, upgrading to the V5 maps might help, as also might installing later firmware — links to both can be found elsewhere in this forum.

My Mk 6 TDI beeps at me now and then — sometimes I can see a reason, sometimes not. If the reason isn't obvious I just ignore it.

Its already the v5 maps. It is saying 'Take the next left towards dummy' because our map data is incomplete (as usual).

It is trying to use the text to speech engine to read the town name and say 'Take the next left towards Carlton' or whatever. But the map data VW use in Aus has always been woefully incomplete when compared with Europe. Not to mention out dated.

So it could easily be fixed by VW Aus if they just made a properly compatible map disk (that could also include Traffic Management Channel info should they chose to license access to Intellimatic's FM service).

The beep could be TMC telling you it has no data. Check that its disabled in the menu as it will not work here (ever? yet?).

The beep usually means you've lost connection to GPS satellites (I only get it when in underground carparks or in forests.

Dream on!!!! That's the whole issue with VW map data it's basic compared to cheaper gps unit like Tom Tom for example. I had the same issue when heading down to Canberra a few weeks back last words spoken by gps could not be understood. I tried both male and female voice setting and found no change.

Doesn't everyone have Google Maps on their phone these days anyway?

Yeah true!! but why resort to your phone when you paid for something thats highly capable and should do the same thing. VW need a good kick in the backside for their ****ty map data.

I thought Sensis/Telstra were more to blame...

Re: What is my Navigation System saying to me??

They provide the underlying geographic data which is then baked into a format consumable by various companies depending on the nav software of choice. So vwa via Continental are responsible for the product in its end user form.
You can't go to Bosch if you have a problem with the ecu in your car. They didn't sell it to you. They sold it as part of a huge bulk order to vw.

I think it all boils down to money — VW overprice the option on the new car — few people buy it — therefore VW opt for the cheapest map data they can get, which turns out to be a cut-down and out-of-date version of what the mass-market hand-helds use.

In countries where more units are sold, the optional equipment is usually cheaper and the maps are better.

One day someone will get into serious trouble from relying on these maps and (hopefully) the vendors thereof will have to cough up damages and may then wake up to themselves.

Thanks for the info guys. I know what your saying about the cheapest mapping data available. We left on Sunday from Vacy in the Hunter Valley to go to Rylstone. Punched the details in and it had us going back into Sydney. After the wife brought out Google Maps and we confused the GPS for a bit it was now taking us out through Dubbo. Even when we were on the Golden Valley Way 11km from Rylstone she was still telling us to make a U Turn and go nearly 250km to get to our destination. My street runs off the Golden Valley Way so I have no idea why she was taking us through Dubbo. Luckily we have half an idea of where we are going and don't rely solely on Feral Beryl for our directions.

Dont get me started about VW mapping.

I went to Surfers from north of Brissy on Sunday.

Nav kept saying in XXXX metres turn right onto M1. First time just before Gateway Bridge. Further down kept giving turn directions to get on M1.

WTF The road is 4 lanes straight ahead all the way. Cant believe how crappy it actually is.

Even V5 is at least 18 months out of date.

Text to speech instructions are laughable Like "Stay on this road for a very long time". How far is a long time.

Doesnt tell you which street to turn off into. Name appears in MFD but am watching the road not the B****y dash readout

Is about 50m out in actual positioning IE says "Turn now" about 50m before you get to the intersection.

Caused me to drive up a blind street that was just before the one I wanted.

In contrast the TomTom in the POLO is dead on with location Maps are updated every 3 months and are up to date.

Gives great text to speech with instructions with the street name you are turning into.

And all for 5% of the price of a RNS510

YEs I know it is an integrated entertainment system but an RCD and a Tomtom would be far better.

Wish I had known it was so bad and I would have got them to remove it when I bought the car.

A friend has just bought a Mazda CX5 and it has Tomtom mapping and is as good as my one and they get free maps regularly as well.

Yes, but is it worth buying? Cheapest I've seen so far is $110 — you can buy a hand-held with better maps for that.

It is very sad that your average $100 TomTom has better more up to date maps, better features (like speed camera's and school zones) AND usually includes free map updates for a period of time (if not for life).

It's a shame that for the cost VW don't at least include free updates, even if they included it as a bonus and tied it to servicing at a dealership it would be a step forward

That said, look at the traditional alternatives from Pioneer etc. Most of them have a similar high price tag and a rather low feature set compared to the portable units as well as having the map upgrade (or loack of) issues.

I'm a little surprised that the big name portable guys (like TomTom) haven't partnered with VW (and/or all the other manufacturers) to integrate their maps into the built in solutions (hell even Pioneer, Clarion etc etc).

...one day... one day *fingers crossed*

Back on topic for a moment, I'll be interested to see how people go with the V6 maps (especially at $110). I wonder what they add over V5 and if it's worth the upgrade.

If it has an engine or heartbeat it's going to cost you.
