Hey, sadly no lens cover, I cleaned the lens yesterday in the hopes that it was just dirty and I could definitely see into the lens.
Only suggested the lens cover as the in handle RVC I bought came with a cover to protect the lens. Turned it on to check and then realised the lens cover was still on....
But sounds like it's a RNS issue if the RCD works.
Check the pinpouts on the 26 pin connector diagram for the rcd and make sure correct camera pins are connected. If not move them to the correct spot.

In my case the RVC is working with RCD510 and it doesn't work with RNS510. I've checked the 26Pin connector and on both units the pin assignments are identical.
I have an Autoscan of a 2009 Tiguan with a factory fitted advanced RVC and an Rns510. If anyone wants a copy of the scan pm me and I will email it to you. From the correspondence above it sounds like a coding issue or a faulty pin in the Rns510 socket itself?. Did the previous owner ever use or test it?

02873 - Control Module for Back-Up Camera (J772)
004 - No Signal/Communication
...does that suggest the car is coded to expect a control module? Or that a plug has been tapped that makes the RNS assume that one is present? Or is this just the error code that's thrown if there's no signal coming from a camera that's been physically plugged into the headunit (or when the headunit is coded for a camera without a controller)?
What this sounds like is the head unit is coded for a reverse camera with control unit to add the dynamic lines. What you have is just the simple camera without a control unit.
I'm guessing you'll need to play with the coding to get this going (unless of course it's a connector issue).
Have you coded the RNS unit to accept the video signal from the camera? Wait, sorry stupid question because you are getting the warning about safe to move...
Do me a favour and uncheck the RVC in the cangateway and see what happens, the camera shouldn't work...
Then as others have said, check the pin assignment. It might be as simple as that....
Tigger, being the pop out camera it does need the control module activated to work, in the navigation module is where you activate the moving lines but it works in conjunction with the camera module...
1. map out camera loom pins from tailgate to headunit and ensure each pin has connectivity and there's no screwed wires. Given your troubleshooting so far, I'm leaning towards this.
Checked, and each pin on one end connects to one on the other, only I don't seem to able to find info to tell me which pin should go where, as the pins on the camera end are arranged in a circle and are not numbered. As it was previously factory fitted and working, I think its safe to assume the pins are correct.
Sounds like Transporter and Jameshero need to meet in Mt Gambier and work this out together... sounding more and more like a coding issue
If only my spare time wasn't between the hours of 8pm and 6am. But yes, leaning towards this being a coding issue sadly. Have emailed Ross-Tech and the Continental Employee I bought my unit from but haven't heard anything as of yet.

Thanks, what I really need though is the long coding from a late model RNS-510 unit with a camera installed to compare against what VCDS is suggesting.

Would also love it if someone could disconnect their camera and do a few 'turn on the car, reverse, turn off the car' and see if they get the same error.
Yeah, weird. Maybe it was a transient fault code and won't come back if cleared, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's hinting at an underlying problem.
Have cleared the errors several times already, so I'm pretty sure that the error has something to do with it. As you mentioned before it would be nice to know whether this error comes up simply by having the camera disconnected, or whether it is a sign it is actually looking for a control module.

Haven't coded the CAN gateway, all documentation I read said all that was required was enabling Address 37, Byte 3, Bit 6. Have tried checking the RVC (6C) in the CAN gateway, but this does not solve the problem, and the CAN gateway then complains that there is no connection to the control module, as is to be expected as I have not installed the control module that connects directly to the CAN bus.

It was my understanding that there was no control module... The only cables connecting to the camera are the Reverse, 12V, Ground, and Video Cables. I was also under the impression that the moving lines are activated by enabling the RVC option in the CAN gateway Installation List, and installing the camera control module.
Thanks again, hoping that this does eventually get sorted out. At the moment my boot has no trim, and i've got cables coming out of my coin tray, and each time I reverse the 'Look! Safe to move?' message just makes me sad.
You said you checked the harness but maybe one of the pins could be just one block out and you missed it?
Otherwise there still seems to be some good info in the rest of that thread that might help you. There are people with the same issue as you as far as I can tell.

I installed the pop out camera, and didn't need the control module enabled. Control module is for the bendy lines IIRC.
Al..
Is that from a car with a reversing camera, the 4th byte '02' only has bit 1 enabled so when I coded my RNS-510, it no longer switches to the Reversing screen, but thanks for trying
finally I get a day off, so I decided to do a bit digging and pulled apart the handle/camera unit, and found that a pin on the camera itself had corroded and snapped, turns out that pin is the 12V pin hence the lack of picture
now kicking myself I didn't try the install earlier, as I sadly can't ask for my money back 6 months after a purchase, will attempt to repair the camera, otherwise I will just have to buy another camera off the internet , thanks for all your help thus far
