    Hey guys,

Bought a Reversing Camera for my Golf a few months ago, finally got around to installing it but have hit a bit of a snag. When I put the car into reverse, the badge and camera pops out, but my RNS-510 screen turns to black with the words "Look! Safe to move?". Ran a VCDS scan, and this is what it came out with...

    Address 37: Navigation Labels: 1T0-035-680.clb
    Control Module Part Number: 1T0 035 680 F HW: 1T0 035 680 F

    Mileage: 23824 km
    Time Indication: 0
    Couple of things worth mentioning...
    • I bought the camera off a guy on this forum. It was originally factory fitted, checked the wiring it came with and it seemed to be OK.
    • The hatch opens up when I pivot the handle and it flips open when I select reverse, leading me to believe that I've tapped the Reverse, Ground, 12V (ran new circuit to fuse 16), and 'Hatch Open' correctly.
    • The only coding I did was to change the RNS-510 Byte 3, Bit 6, from 0 to 1, and am now wondering why its trying to connect to a control module.
    • The harness had the following connections to the actual camera (as apposed to the badge) 12V+ connected to the Red wire, Ground to the Brown wire and Reverse to the Yellow wire, have checked the VW Flow Diagram and this seems correct.
    • Had previously upgraded to firmware v.4120, but have since downgraded to v.3970 to see if the camera would work.

Just wondering if anybody can shed some light on my situation. Was really excited when the badge popped out, but then realised I had no picture At a loss as to what is causing the camera to not work, and why the RNS-510 is looking for a control module.

    Thanks
    James

In address 19 can gateway installation untick 6c reverse camera and check that in the address 37 the rvc is selected.

Remove your RNS again and double check that the video cable plug is 100% fully home. I'd leave the unit dangling out of the dash (on a towel or something so you don't scratch your dash) and select reverse while pushing the plugs on the back of the head unit to confirm.

Oh and have you done a reboot of the head unit? Hold < > * simultaneously fof 4 or 5 seconds.

Thanks for your advice, have tried reseating the plug, but will try doing it while selecting reverse tomorrow morning. Getting the intervention load management error now so the battery is starting to get low. And yeah i did reset my head unit, it's changing screens when I select reverse, but it's just coming up black so the coding has worked, presumably. Still curious as to why it's trying to connect to a control module though.

          Thanks, will keep you posted.

+1 to cable reseat at head unit end. Seen this more than once. It looks seated, but pull the connector out, push it in as much as you can THEN push the locking arm mechanism over to fully secure it.

Have you properly tried it with the car moving in reverse?

Sometimes reverse trigger wire doesn't seem to send the signal with a dodgey connection. Like it's in sleep mode.

It may only wake up when you put your foot on the gas.

Also try opening your driver side door and closing it again, to see if it wakes it up.

So first of all thanks heaps for your advice. Unfortunately I've tried every seemingly possible combination of your advice, jiggling the cable, open and closing the door, moving backwards, both with the engine running and not running, but the thing still won't work. Any other suggestions? I've tested the coax cable with a multimeter and that seems to be OK. Red is definitely positive and Brown ground yes? It would be convention, but i'm grasping at straws here. Is there anyway to test the camera with a multimeter? Would its output be large enough to detect? In the event that it is the camera, is it possible to buy just the camera, rather than the whole badge housing, as that definitely works? Thanks again for your help.

As I push the connector in, the locking arm moves, so that when the connector is seemingly all the way in, the locking arm is almost shut already. Am I doing something wrong? Your post seems to suggest that I am =P

Just check there's not a lens cover on the camera.....

I had enabled the option in my RCD510 before installing the RVC hardware and I got a blue screen with "Look! Safe to move?" message. I'm guessing that a black screen means there's a connection but just no picture (or a very dark one). I'd be looking at the camera/connection.

I have only installed the boot handle style not the pop out badge but sounds like you havethe electrical side going. Is there separate power to the camera than to the badge motor?

Hey, sadly no lens cover, I cleaned the lens yesterday in the hopes that it was just dirty and I could definitely see into the lens. When I disconnect the camera from the RNS510 the screen stays black, perhaps it's got to do with using an RCD vs RNS, so really can't tell whether it's the camera or the unit, trying to work out a way I could test either. There are separate power inputs for the motor and the camera, but the two are wired in parallel on the wiring harness I got, so are both receiving 12V from the same fuse. I assume that these were wired correctly as the harness was from a car that had the RVC factory fitted. Thanks for your input though

                        jameshero,

                        1. map out camera loom pins from tailgate to headunit and ensure each pin has connectivity and there's no screwed wires. Given your troubleshooting so far, I'm leaning towards this.
                        2. double check coding (paste the autoscan).
                        3. Beg/borrow/steal another camera to test.

I would say, borrow the rcd510 with 26 pin connector and try if it works. I have the same issue; wanted to install rns510 in our Tiguan that works well with rcd510 and when I install rns510 the screen is black. I'vetried other rns510 with the same result, so I put the rcd510 back in for now and I'm going chase the coding in holidays.

I will watch this thread with interest.

Nope - that is it, when you push it in the quadlock connector arm moves over, and then it should 'click' into place if you push the connector in a bit more - but the small latch on my connector broke, and I had to use a cable tie to fixx it in place.

Check the pinpouts on the 26 pin connector diagram for the rcd and make sure correct camera pins are connected. If not move them to the correct spot.
