Things like boost or more advanced information typically are only available through the engine bus or alternatively through the diagnostic bus with OBD2.

OBD2 is meant to be a standardised way for generic readers to be able to read information, but a lot of the important information are often still specific to a manufacturer, so that's what I mean by significant R&D because there's no way to do it except to do it from scratch by yourself, those who have found how to read the correct specific data for VW will be guarding the information closely. So even if you look at Torque on android, the information it shows is limited and whether it can show boost depends on the car, it claims to have it on cars that have MAF or MAP sensors but it does not work on my Golf 5 TDI. That's why I say even as an OBD module, it is likely not going to have things like boost or timing pull, it will never come close to replacing VCDS.
How is it possible to read maf and throttle % without a cable running to the obd port?

    • Reading it directly from the CANbus. The ODBII port is an external interface to the bus. The head unit is connected to the CANbus in order to get speed info, communicate with the steering wheel controls, detect reverse select etc.

From there, I can press the Menu button which takes me to the USB screen, but doesn't play or recognise the drive. Interestingly, if I unplug the drive it gives a NO usb drive present message (or something like that). It plays the SD card fine and the radio.
Checking the fw version, it shows 20120405. I didn't check what it was prior to updating. The version I downloaded was the '405 one.
I reinstalled the fw, but it does the same thing.

        Thoughts?
That's a bit difficult to say, if it was working before then it seems like it's the firmware. I am not certain what would happen if you flashed the wrong firmware for your hardware, but I was told it is very important to get it right. Having said that I'm fairly certain you should have the 20120405 BT. which firmware version did you flash? The one from my last email?

Yes, the one from your email. Can you send me the previous version?

          • I installed the ANS-510 in my GTI today, the unit looks great, I haven't had much time to play around with it yet.

Just a quick question before I go out and buy new SD cards, what are the limitations for SD cards on this unit? From what I have observed in this thread most people are going for 4GB cards, is this because of the Fat vs Fat32 issue or because of the performance issues with larger cards?

Also Sandy can you please email me the latest firmware, I would love to update it ASAP.

Sorry mate, thought I already did that - too many things happening at the same time these days. Sent you the email.

With the SD card FAT32 limit is 32GB, but if you want to flash the firmware it needs to be FAT which has a limit of 4GB. So if you want to use SD card for your music etc, I recommend you get two cards, one 2 or 4GB reserved for firmware flashing and another any size you like up to 32GB.

              • Just installed the older FW that you sent me Sandy. It made no difference. It recognises when I insert/remove the drive, but it still won't read the USB drive. I plugged the drive into my pc and it reads it fine. I even copied the files from it to my SD card and plugged that in to the unit which it reads fine. I've checked the cabling and it's all good.
Bummer. Don't know what to do now.

That's odd. Seems like a pretty specific issue though, check your PM.

                  • I've read as much as i could, and i think i'm ready to purchase this unit. Just a few questions, for you DKN, i didn't see these asked in previous threads (perhaps i just didn't see it, sorry)

                    1. The RNS510 has three different color schemes accessed using vagcom (highline, sportline and premium). It looks like the ANS model mirrors the premium color scheme. Do you know if the ANS has the ability to change color schemes like the RNS models?

                    2. Will the volume fluctuate with the speed of the vehicle like my current premium 7 radio?

                    3. If a car is equipped with Dynaudio there is a vagcom change so on the RNS 510 boot up splash screen shows the Welcome to VW sound by Dynaudio. Do you know if this is a possibility on the ANS?

                    4. I think i read somewhere that you do not ship to the US, but if i buy directly from Audiosources, can i pay your member fee to receive firmware updates?

                    thanks so much!

                      1. The ANS only has either the red VW theme or the green Skoda theme.

                      2. Not at the moment, but it is a planned feature.

                      3. I don't think this is possible. Most of the VCDS values are designed to affect the RNS only. The ANS units have decoded the CAN-Bus to communicate information to the MFD and get things like AC and other information, but not to read RNS coding. Of course this is possible but I don't think they will spend the R&D for something like this (which requires monitoring the CAN-Bus signal and extensive testing for each individual value) when the unit is otherwise perfectly functional.

                      4. Yes you can pay $25 AUD to subscribe to my update service.

edit: on second thought for the Dynaudio thing though, there won't be a VCDS value read, but I think it's perfectly possible to allow user customisation of the loading screen, so you can manually choose the Dynaudio welcome screen. Audiosources have been playing with user selected loading screens lately, I'll see what they can do. Perhaps you have some pictures / recording of the Dynaudio boot screen to help out?

That should be easy enough to implement, it's just the Dynaudio logo stuck over the normal loading screen. The latest firmware already has a menu where you can choose from a few preset loading screens, I don't know about being able to set your own pictures as loading screens but at the very least I can get them to include the Dynaudio screen in the preset options.

The ANS series unit only has A2DP at the moment so it will not be able to read song info through BT. I've been in touch with them about this and found them a new supplier that supports Bluetooth 3.0 and AVRCP 1.4, but obviously this is not something that can be mitigated by software.
That's so unfortunate.. would have been awesome if it could do that... That's pretty much all I ever use is bluetooth connected to my phone.. And it would be fantastic to have song information on screen.. oh well...

                            • I have uncovered a bit of a frustrating bug in the firmware, and would love to know if anyone has found a way around it. I usually listen to long DJ sets (2+hrs) that are a single mp3 track. I have noticed that when I am listening to a set (say 20mins into it) I will turn the car off and go to work, then come back after work and start the car to find the set has started from the beginning.

To make it more frustrating the "fast forward" button is ineffective because it skips so slowly through the set that its not worth using. I know this is bug rather then a setting because it doesn't always happen. I think I would cope better with it if the fast forward function moved through the track quicker, or if you could select a certain part of the track using the right jog wheel (it doesn't seem to do anything at the moment during SD mode).

                              • I have an ANS-610. Is there anyway of changing the icon (the arrow head, your car) in the Navigation screen? I cant seem to find an option! Secondly, my FM tuner is set to the USA. When set to Europe, and RDS is turned on, I cant detect any stations. But they scan fine with USA. Any ideas?
