Hello Sandy, while waiting for the new units i have started to think that the ANS810 buttons being on top is not OEM style so am thinking more about the 510-610 units now. i assume all have the same HW and SW and the only difference is screen size, right?
Did you perhaps perform a firmware upgrade recently? Sometimes this can happen. Try resetting the iGo software by deleting the folder named "save" on your GPS SD.
my unit has been working great but over the last few days the gps signal has been very flakey, sometimes i never get a signal, sometimes i get a signal after 20 minutes and other times after exiting igo and going back in a few times and then waiting a few minutes it finds a signal.
it used to be that it would have a signal as soon as the car was started, i've not changed anything and still park in the same places that i did when the signal was instant.
any ideas?
Where did you attach the GPS antenna?
Have you checked to see if the antenna connector has not come loose?
All the units within the same series have identical hardware across the different models.
The knobs need to be on top for the 8 inch model because it's more narrow at the bottom. It still looks perfectly stock when installed, but those more familiar with VW would obviously be able to tell that's not an OEM model. There are a few pictures of the 810 installed in dash from this thread if you scan through the first 10 pages or so.
Perform a full firmware flash and then so another GPS reset, if that does not work then something is wrong with either the antenna cable or the hardware.

100% true. its all personal reference, i would love the 8" screen in my dashboard but again i always try to stay as near to OEM as possible.
As the screen resolution is identical (800 x 640) for both models, would that mean the smaller screen will actually look nicer? Same number of lines over a smaller area being my logic but please correct me if I'm wrong.

Technically yes but you can't identify individual pixels either way from the driver seat. This isn't a phone that you hold close to your face, so the bigger screen makes more sense - why waste pixels that you can't see? Bigger size in a car environment can only be bad if you can identify visual flaws.
I have owned both a 6.5 inch unit and my current ANS 810 and I can tell you I would never go back to a smaller screen. The only reasons I would not recommend the 810 are when a customer really does not like the design as a matter of personal taste and when they really want to stick close to OEM.

i don't have the firmware to flash with, the seller has told me to move the antenna to somewhere above the dash. the only place i can see that won't look rubbish is behind the rearview mirror, what do you think?
its tucked under the centre vents, its been fine up until a week ago.
where do other people have theres?
i've checked the connections and they're all fine.
When I fitted mine (Caddy Maxi Life), there was a vertical surface just to the left of the opening where the unit went. I glued mine to that surface.
Oh yes, the excess cable should be wound into a figure of 8 pattern and kept like this with cable ties. If you wind it it, it will act an an antenna itself and not necessarily pick up the GPS signal.
I had mine mounted in the dash, behind the mirror and now just on top of dash in the very corner at bottom of windscreen. Found best signal there. Looks OK too.
