Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • OK I am not a specialist BUT

all beginning of command line in original firmware start with 0D 0A code exept with you modifed command line.

It seems to me important to try to understand why the version for RNS B C D.. do not work while that for RNS A and previous seem good to work.

    • As I said you can edit this file so you can test your theory. Other people have been able to load it to c or later units.
Please do let us know if after you edit the file it makes a difference.
I don't think it will but would be happy to be proved wrong.

      • If you not be convinced, I am not going to flash my RNS (HW52 / FW2840 - 1T0 035 680 C) because I went to preserve it in working order.

As I said, I am not specialist, just curious.

        • I am convinced but if you aren't then as I mentioned you can edit the file.
I have been wrong in the past.
I think it was in 1992.

Sorry I'm being a bit facetious...
If you don't feel comfortable testing it then use the stock 4020 fw image.

          • I have a hard time expressing myself clearly in English. I do not mean to say you're wrong, i just want to understand why there are so many negative post about the 4020 update (new RNS) for Europe.

I do not think this is due to burning because too many different people have problems, always at the same time of the update.

Modify partitions is a real advantage of your firmware. Can we change the formatting in 70/25/5 instead of 75/20/5 without modifying CRC ?

            • You express yourself very well in English, no problems there

It is possible to change the partition ratios, but we need to generate a file that will produce the exact same CRC as is expected by the factory CD, so need special software and hardware dongle. I don't have it at the moment, another forum user has it so will ask him to create the dlscript.txt file that is needed. Then you can insert it into the ISO (and also an edited .WSH file) and have ratios of 70/25/5.

              • Hello,

                I find this : https://docs.google.com/open?id=0Bzn...E5uYjVPZ3VrdWc

This firmware image file have been modified to use a custom partition scheme 65/30/5. It is specially designed for 30 Go HDD for European map data. Testmode menu have been enabled.

I don't know if it works...

                  • Regrettably I cannot make the test. I have a hard disk of 40 GO and for this HDD the scheme 70/25/5 is better.

                    My RNS510 (HW52 / FW2840 - 1T0 035 680 C) have a HDD with 3 partitions, and this firmware does not format a disk which has already 3 partitions.

Obviously it does not work. Seems like someone just modified partition sheme, but did not know how to update CRC. I tried it on my C unit.

I have 30GB hdd and I need to put both East Europe and West Europe maps. So I definitely need 65/30/5. Could someone do the file and crc?

first of all sorry for my bad English

I read a lot of posts to look for information how to enable the tv button in a RNS510 without an interface, it seems possible with changing the firmware. Do anyone know where can I find the firmware source code? I would like to analyze it to see if we can enable the tv.
Thank you and a great work

                        • I just upgraded my 510 running 3970 where I have 15GB available music space to 4020 using FW_4020_a_70_25_5.ISO and I am generally happy as it seems faster, well as fast as I would expect. The odd thing is that it has repartitioned my drive and I now have just shy of 28GB of music space on offer. I assumed it wouldn't repartition and also because I thought my drive was 30GB not 40GB. I loaded my maps (v5) no problem and I guess it went to the 10GB partition (25%) and the 2GB (5%) must be for the POI. Can someone just confirm my calulations are correct pls? Also, what is the difference between the FW_4020_a_70_25_5 and the FW_4020? Is it that the "a" is for the A hardware and the rest is the partitioning? Anyhow, thanks. I have noticed it likes to start on the radio, but think a reboot might fix it.

You're in the wrong thread...you should be using the Aus/NZ firmware upgrade.
That will give you 90/5/5 partition ratios which will free up a lot of space for music. 70/25/5 is for Europe where their map data is much larger.
Thats the only difference. And yes it will repartition, it was designed to do that...

And yes the a is for older units that need some changes for compatibility.

You cannot enable TV just with a firmware update. You need the actual TV tuner which is another device.
