just purchased RNS510 after market! Excited but apprehensive
BOOOYAAAA!!!! I'm so happy! I received my RNS510 today. Installed it in less than 30 mins. It's working great! It works with all of the steering wheel controls and climate control perfectly.
My MFD now gains an extra navigation feature that contains compass. I noticed that the "next turn" also displays on the MFD in addition to a line indicating how close the next route point is. For example, if I'm approaching a roundabout or turn, the white solid bar on the MFD shrinks as I approach. The "next turn" directions are timed very well with ~15m before the turn point.
All this & didn't require VCDS at all!!
The only hiccup I had was first activation took a long time for the unit to figure out my location. All starts since then locate me pretty quickly. From reading various forums this is common.
One of the fins around the edge where the screw holes are is bent, but I straightened that out with pliers.
Does anyone with RNS510 know if the cooling fan running all the time is normal? The RCD310 presumably doesn't run much since it draws little power, but tonight's temps were cool and the fan was running quite fast. I wonder how things will be on a hot day!!
By the way, I give full props to this video that shows exactly how to install the RNS510 (incl antenna position). The antenna position is obviously working well for me.
I'm one really happy camper. Fingers crossed the unit is good.
What fan running fast? I never notice it. You're lucky as mine doesn't do the turn by turn in the MFD. i have to get it reprogrammed.
I put neutral feedback for the bent mounting tab, so leave it as a neutral. He'll ask to change it, but if 2 of them have the same issue, then it's due to damage prior to shipping. F'ing toss pot! Wish I could change my feedback now! Grrrr

Reason: Correct typo.

My expectations were quite low when I read that these units basically were factory new but with a fault, so I didn't worry as much about the tab. It was annoying, but fixable.
I was ambiguous... what I meant was whether the cooling fan in your RNS510 unit runs so fast that it's quite noisey? My unit seems to be quiet but after 5 mins the internal cooling fan can be heard.
I will experiment by not running maps & navigation to see if that helps reduce the power the CPU is drawing & in turn requiring less of the cooling fan.
Nope. My fan is quiet. I've run it with dvds and it's been fine. The mounting tab was my gripe. Was it the bottom left tab that was bent?
Top left corner.
Maybe a new thread will be spawned about new features of Version C, but I noticed that when nav mode is off, the MFD NAV screen still indicates the road I am driving on as well as the compass direction.
The turn by turn directions generally do not generally pronounce the road name. However, the road reference is read out if a major road. e.g. Victoria road is state road 40, so the turn by turn said "turn left onto ess forty"
I do wish navteq maps were as good with labelling roads & suburbs as google maps, but I find a zoom of 100% gives me the best compromise on road labelling vs map detail.
Installed mine last weekend, i had no issues with the unit itself, no tabs bent or anything, was overall in very good condition. Only issue i've had was that it needed some VCDS recoding. My unit was set to run with Dynaudio which i don't have, therefore sound quality and volume was very poor, i also needed NAV to be switched on to get the directions to show up on the MFD (which i think is excellent). Thats all fixed now.
Only other thing i've noticed is that the RNS 510 takes ages to initially boot up, but apparently that's pretty normal.

Did you also order yours from the eBayer in Lithuania? Ozgti and I had the same supplier, so there may be a tenuous correlation (as in this guy's business model is to buy units with damaged chassis from Continental).
yeah, agreed that having the current street name in the MFD is cool... it's practical & helps a lot. Particularly in a place like Sydney where signage isn't the best.
My boot up isn't too bad. I noticed audio from the radio comes up in around 2 seconds when I started the car this morning & again this evening.

btw nice ride.
Yep purchased mine from the guy in Lithuania also.
As for the boot up the music starts pretty much straight away it's just it takes a while before it allows you to change to a different source. Have figured out now though that the unit starts to power up as soon as you open the door so if you take your time getting your keys out and starting the car the unit has already done it's initialisation and is ready and raring to go.

Thanks ozgti; I am generally reluctant to go to a dealer unless it is absolutely necessary.....I actually meant can anyone describe resetting the region code with the VCDS?
You can always ask Jmac? He might be even close to you and has mobile workshop, so he could do it at your place.
There's a button right most of the CD slot. When I press it a voice command menu comes up. I've been yelling like crazy at the unit (and particular the dot top right corner of the unit) but doesn't seem to do anything.
Searching through the above manual there's no mention of this key (particularly since pages 3 & 4 are missing).
Should the RNS510 have an internal mic? Should I have installed one? Any other info on what the key does? There's an 'i' graphic on it as well.
