  • just purchased RNS510 after market! Excited but apprehensive

    Hey all,

just thought to mention that I just bought an RNS 510 unit for my Golf 6 118TSI. Purchased it from eBay. It's the MFD3 which (from my research) seems to be near new reconditioned units that had a fault when brand new (or the crew could somehow have struck a deal with Continental to do special purchases on the side).

It'll take around 4 days to arrive from Lithuania. Looks like a trusted eBayer.

The install looks pretty straight forward from what I've seen on forum posts & Youtube videos. PNP

Will keep you all up to date on whether the quality is there... but looks more trustworthy than the better featured WD6050 satnav units which seem to suffer from battery drain on even the Mark 6 Golfs with the latest CanBus.

They accepted $830... including $100 postage it's $930 all up... compared to > $3,000 from the dealer, I'm quite happy.

Originally was thinking of upgrading to RCD510, but when I found this deal it was too hard to ignore.

I did heaps of research on RNS510 and WD6050 before finally making up my mind and committing to the spend.

To the moderators, this is a repeat post of the one i've made in the Golf 6 forum... don't know how to link but happy to do so once someone explains how to do it.

I got one as well. Ordered/paid Friday, received it Tuesday. Only prob I had was a mounting tab was bent and the dvd regions are set to region 2 (uk/europe).

Guy also asked me to revise my feedback. The tosser hasn't left me any feedback yet! Got mine for $815+$100 del.

you can fix the dvd region via vcds when you set up the steering wheel and MDI integration

Mine was already configured for steering controls. Just the region was off!

Cool... thanks for the tip. Hasn't been sent yet as payment is yet to clear. Don't know why my credit card and paypal have taken so long to make payment.

Anyway, the delay gave me time to message the seller to ensure it is encoded to region 4. I don't have VCDS so I'm counting on a plug & play experience!

It's also interesting to see what others have paid for the unit. Prior to the $A going up looks like people were paying around A$1100

The MDI works, but the next route direction doesn't come up in the MFD. I'm getting the firmware upgrade since my golf is getting warranty work done on it, and asked to change to region 4, so we'll see what happens.

Does anyone know if the nav directions should come up on the MFD

So does the compass display on the MFD? I've seen on a friend's Golf Wagon with RNS510 that it does display the next direction.

Ozgti did you get Version C? Supposedly the one I've ordered is Version C.

I also went for the LCD version, not the LED version with the star button (whatever the star button is).

I had my dealer install the unit in my 6R Polo GTI (along with a bluetooth module) and after installation the directions and compass didn't display but after a bit of tinkering with VCDS I got it working.

Yeah, Apparently it is version C (How do you check?) The tig I have as the courtesy car has compass directions. The R I test drove has turn by turn in the MFD. Good as sometimes you don't really hear watch "Bitchin' Betty" has to say or if you have the phone on and muted, you don't get anything from her!

The seller states the version. Not sure how else to check.

The seller replied and said the DVD is set to region 2 like yours. They added that I need to use VCDS to change the region.

Looks like I might as well get VCDS since i want to change a few other settings in my car and potentially add the bluetooth as well. May also need VCDS to fiddle around to get the MFD to display the turn by turn directions... which i think is very cool.

                        Some RNS 510 questions.

Just installed an RNS 510 C LED that i purchased from ebay to replace my RCD 510 and have a few questions:

                        1. I am aware the unit stays on for a period of time once the key is removed however after leaving mine for approx 40mins i was still able to turn the unit on without inserting a key, is that normal? (this was done without opening a door, done by just leaning in)
                        2. On the initial boot up screen where it says welcome to VW it also says sound by Dynaudio. I don't have Dynaudio so does that mean the unit is setup to play through a dynaudio system? (it may just be me but when playing songs through my ipod the sound doesn't seem quite as good as my RCD510)
                        3. Is there a way while using the Nav to get the chick to say the street names instead of 'turn left now' and also to display the speed limit on the street you are traveling on.
4 Finally, what the hell does the 'star' button actually do? i pressed it and nothing happens...

That's all the questions i have at this stage

Going back to a previously mentioned issue in this thread - setting the Region Code; I have a new Skoda Octy (MY2011) with Columbus (RNS510) and the region code is wrong - frustrating considering it came standard with the car delivered in Australia!
I had a look, but cannot find where anyone has described resetting the region code. Anyone able to assist?

Either take it back to Skoda/VW or get someone with VCDS to change it.

Thanks ozgti; I am generally reluctant to go to a dealer unless it is absolutely necessary.....I actually meant can anyone describe resetting the region code with the VCDS?
