  • The RNS 510 and Bluetooth were installed fine. No issues at all to report here.

There are only 4 things which are annoying me which I need to get sorted tomorrow.

    - The dealer has kept the radio card that came with the unit. I did thankfully take a photo of it this morning before I dropped it off, but they have not given it back to me. Which is something that is very important if I ever pull the battery out of my car for whatever reason.

    - They did not use the harness I ordered. They have just installed the unit under the carpet in the car. What is also very odd, is that they have requested on the invoice that I pay for the part I ordered? So I dont know what is going on there.

    - The voice activation works if I press the star button on the RNS510, but it doesnt work if I press the mic button on the streering wheel. Instead if pauses whatever is playing.

    - The RNS510 took about 10mins to find out where it was while I was driving the car back home. Every time I have turned the car on since, it located me pretty much straight away.

    - Something I thought was abit concerning is, after I turned off the car (keys out of the igniton) I can hear a fan making a 'whuring' sound in the dash. Which is clearly coming from the RNS 510. However it did not turn off when I took the keys out of the ignition. I am hoping/guessing it powers off automatically or after you lock the car. But I dont know for sure. Can anyone shed some light on that?

    - iPhone 4 running iOS 4.1 works fine with the bluetooth. Phonebook imports really easily too.

That's the default functioning of the MIC button when you don't have the RNS-510. Just remind them that they need to code that for you.

I believe this is quite normal for first usage.

You should know by now not to be concerned about stuff like this. Just because you've turned the car off, doesn't mean all the heat has magically disappeared. It'll turn off its internals when it's ready to... the same as the car will leave oil pumps for the turbos and fans for the radiators etc running if it needs to.

      • I have done a search on the web and it looks like the newer RNS 510's leave their fans running for 20minutes after you close the door. The moment that you open the door the RNS 510 will kick into life. The aim is to have instant on and instant GPS access once you turn the ignition key on apparently.

I have been told to test for sure.

        - turn car off
        - open door
        - stay seated
        - close door
        - wait 20mins and the fan should turn off, as it thinks you have left the car.

Back on track though, the Bluetooth is brilliant!

        • Yeah the Blutooth is fantastic.

A bargain option at $550 for anyone ordering a new Golf.

I have to wonder though whether it will be compatible with the RCD310, or whether you'll also need to upgrade to an RCD510 or RNS510 which will increase the price for the non GTI/R spec Golf's quite considerably.

          • Don't worry about the code. It is stored in the Vagcom - you only ever have to enter it once for any car.

            • so if 2-3 yrs down the track i swap the new RNS510 with the original RCD510 that came with the car originally (e.g. before selling), the RCD510 shouldn't ask for code anymore? reason is because the dealer didn't give RCD510s' code card it was nowhere in the car nor in the manual book or anything...

                • Genuine Bluetooth installed in Sydney for $350 sounds cheap.

                  • Doesn't look like the unit I purchased. I would avoid it, as I don't really know much about that one.

                    • That may be the old basic Nokia VW unit. It's definitely not the 9W2, 9W3 or 9W7/9ZB unit.

My question is - does anybody know for sure, if the MY11 Bluetooth upgrade option on the Golf R (for $550) will work with the iPhone?

                        • Yes, it will work with the iPhone.

                          MY11 Bluetooth = 9ZB and is a factory option.

                          • Hey guys newbie here.

I see a lot of ppl talking about the 9W7 kit for their MK6 golf. I've got a MkV Pirelli with RNS510. Would this kit work or do I have to get the 9W3 kit? Also where is the best place to have the BT kit installed in brissy.

                            Thanks in advance guys.

                              Hey Mate,

Unfortunately the 9W7 (or 9ZB as known in Aust) won't work with your car as you need the white MFD, and it is my belief that the mk5 has the red MFD.

                              Cheers,

                              Pete
