Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Multivan T5.1 Front Speaker Replacement

So the drivers front speaker in our Multivan has given up the ghost and I finally got around to replacing it today. This was more of a "get it working"sort of approach rather than anything really upgradey so the plan was just to replace the door speaker with another one and not worry about the tweeter, spilt circuit (if there is one?) or anything else. I've seen speakers fail and be all scratchy before, but this one just stopped working at all. No idea why, just dead.

It's bloody hot outside today so I didn't get any pictures, but I plan on doing the passengers side too so they match and I have a spare so will have to grab some pictures of that side which I'm sure will be the same.

The stock speaker is rivetted in place and looks to be a 7" Blaupunkt OEM? The speaker really is a custom job and is integrated into it's own frame to mount the speaker to the door in a single piece of plastic.

A little Macgyver action with a dremel and an MDF spacer allowed me to mount the spacer to the old speaker frame and then a new 6.5" Pioneer speaker into that. This setup has allowed me to retain the OEM plugs, mounting and rubber gasket holding it all together. I should have photos in the next few days of all the bits and how it fits together when I do the other side.

All in all it didn't take all that long and other than the usual pain of removing door trim it was relatively painless little project.

If it has an engine or heartbeat it's going to cost you.

Small update, Ive now had a chance to go for a drive with the new speaker and it doesn't seem to have the same volume as the other side despite being a 300W speaker, although this is a two way rather than a just a bass speaker. I did sort of expect the new one to perform better than the old one, but then it was a (maybe) slightly larger component speaker.

    New Pioneer 300W ($60 Autobarn)

    Pioneer 6" 2-way speaker TS-G1620F

The debate now is do I change it, lose volume and bass response, and have them match... or hunt up another OEM one...

Plan B is to hunt up a small 2 channel amp to use on the two new front two speakers leaving the stock tweeters in place running off the head unit, but running the doors up front as two-way's from a dedicated amp as well... mmmm interesting.

If it has an engine or heartbeat it's going to cost you.
