I tried it out tonight for a few minutes. It appears to work well, the only complaint is that the speed limits seem to be in the top right corner and hidden by the next turn information
they seem to have fixed this in an update at some stage. speed info is now in top left.
Yep, this does work now. The only thing I don’t think they can do thanks to apples rules is show the current speed. You still get audible alterts if you go too fast but it doesn’t show how fast you’re actually going which I always liked.
It’s also a bit of a shame they the iPhone and headinit have to display the same thing, so you can be running maps on the head unit and music on the phone screen. It’s one or the other on both.
If it has an engine or heartbeat it's going to cost you.

Yeah it’s annoying. Waze shows current speed fine in IOS only.
Doesn’t show on my pioneer CarPlay headunit in work van or the B8 Passat.
Similar annoyance with the twin display thing. Phone can show turn by turn commands or traffic alerts and HU can display map. But not 2 different things like Spotify and maps etc.
Carplay is great in my new Polo. Only thing that bugs me is that almost every time I plug the phone in I need to unplug and replug it in to get audio out for sound etc. System beeps and boops come through the car fine but if I want music or podcasts then you gotta remove it and try again. Really annoying. Doesn't happen with same phone in our Octavia
BMW 1 series has wireless carplay so it's hardly a new tech (1 series is end of life). No idea why VW have made this plug in only.
I'll have to source a short USB cable I guess... I'm about to get a new Golf R and carplay will be a great new feature to use.
As I understand it Carplay simply mirrors the iphone so there is no splitting of apps across both like you would on a multi monitor PC for example?
I played with a new A250 merc and both displays on it can be customised extensively so the lack of that in the cockpit diaply for VW is again, a bit of a dissapointment.
I am pretty sure they could do a firmware update and revamp this... but also pretty sure they will give owners the finger on it as the full digital implementation of the Mk8 may be perceived as less ground breaking if they did that.
For me plugging in isn’t an issue. Keeps the phone fully charged ready for when I get out of the car. Seriously drains battery life just running on Bluetooth.
Running CarPlay for nav + steaming music sees my iPhone 8 Plus not charge (but not go down either). I don't know that wireless would be able to keep up at all.
If it has an engine or heartbeat it's going to cost you.
