How's Waze in Australia?

Waze (and even Google Maps) would be a great alternative via CarPlay to get realtime traffic information.

Shame it can't be displayed on the active display.

Waze is pretty good. I prefer Google Maps. Keep in mind Google own Waze now.

The better Waze features are the Police and Light warnings, Speeding warnings...

I don't have experience with Apple but on Android it will run in the background and alert you of "issues" on the road ahead even if you are using the in-car nav and/or playing music.

I've been considering an upgrade to a CarPlay unit for a while and this announcement (while not yet implemented) has been enough to tip me over the edge to pull the trigger on one.

While the RCD330+ was the obvious choice (and a little cheaper) I've opted for a Pioneer AVH-Z3100DAB which is a step down in the model range from the current Pioneer AVIC F20BT... except it's 8 years newer (and I rarely use the Pioneer NAV since I prefer Waze anyway). The real draw of this unit was the inclusion of digital radio. It should turn up soon and I'll post up a review once I get it installed.

Common problems with iOS11.3 onwards.

Makes you sound like you’re talking underwater. Only seems to effect iPhone 5-8.

I have an iPhone X and use it with CarPlay all the time in my Tiguan, what issues are you having?

I'll give it a bash to explain.

I use Google Play Music for music streaming and Overcast for Podcasts, both of them are CarPlay supported.
When I plug in my iPhone 8+ it connects to CarPlay and initially appears to work, I can select "Play Music" and it appears to work normally.

If I switch to Apple Maps this works, but when I try to switch back to Google Music (or any other non Apple app) I get a back screen. Music is still playing in the background, I just have nothing on the screen on either "Now Playing" or "Play Music" (or Overcast if I try to switch to that).

The reason I think this might be specific to the 8 (and maybe the X too since they are built on similar hardware) is that if I plug in my Wifes 6S everything works just fine and I can switch back and forth between apps without issue. Even if I then unplug hers and plug mine back in I get the black screen... back to hers and it works fine, switch to mine and I'm still getting a black screen.

I'm wondering if this is an iPhone issue or maybe a Pioneer issue (I'm using a Pioneer AVH-Z3100DAB).

It would be cool if anyone near 3137 who had a CarPlay head unit would be able to let me test my phone...

If you're around the Prahran area on an evening or weekend sometime, I might be able to help out. Recently installed a CarPlay-compatible Pioneer head unit in my Passat (got it and the harness, RAP/canbus and facia all on Amazon US before June 30). Have connected an iPhone 6S Plus and a 7 to it and haven't had any issues with it, so far.

Has anyone managed to get the Google Maps in Carplay working here in Australia yet? I've got iOS12 and updated Google Maps but it's still not showing in Carplay (under Settings/Carplay/Volkswagen)

Google haven’t released an update for their Maps app that supports CarPlay on iOS12 yet. It is still in Beta version so have to wait for them to release this before you can use it in CarPlay, same with Waze.

FYI - Google have released the update for their Google Maps app. I haven’t tested it yet but after installing the update I can now see the icon for it in the CarPlay settings on my phone. Will try it out today and see how well it works.

Really? I tried an hour ago and it still wasn't working - no Google Maps icon on my screen. There is no update either when I go to App Store. I did the upgrade to iOS 12 yesterday.
