Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Anyone in Adelaide can help with immo on T4?

We're having an immobiliser issue on our 98 T4 Caravelle. I've fixed lots on this van already and I would like to just disable the immobiliser instead of going down the route of replacing this that and the other spending hundreds of dollars on parts that aren't faulty like I did with the ignition issue it first had when we bought it.
I would like to find someone around the Adelaide area that I can pay to flash it and disable the immo.

You might have a bad key reader. Have you scanned the ecu yet. Better do that first. I don't think you can flash ecus to cancel immobilisers back that far

Yes, scanned and tells me the immobiliser failed (like not recognized the key). I only have one key with a chip in it, so can't test if its the chip but with my knowledge about how these rfid type devices work its unlikely to be the chip. I've read about people replacing the antenna and it still not working, which is why i'd rather just disable it to ensure reliable starting with running into this issue when we're away camping in the van.

My research makes out that the ECU is a simos model, not ME7. Still trying to find out if they're flashable.

You cant flashing the immo chip in my experience.

I agree that the chips are reliable, no moving parts. But the key reader coils fail a bit, sometimes, unplugging and reconnecting fixes them. Thats what I think you should do first.
If youu want immo off, you'll probably want a lock smith
