  • Mk7 Golf GTI Performance upgrades

Ive been trying to do some research on what is on offer for performance upgrades for the GTI. Can't really find much info on the net that is in Australia. What places offer kits, like stage 1,2 and 3 sort of thing... preferably in nsw. Thanks guys

Where in NSW are you? Depending on where you are based will be your limiting factor for upgrades.

A lot of people are using the Burger Motorsports JB1 tuning device, which has proven gains on the Mk7 GTI and R, is about 1/2 the price of most other tunes, and can easily be DIY fitted/removed so they are quite handy. See here: http://www.vwwatercooled.com/forums/...le-114939.html

Otherwise, you have the likes of aftermarket ECU tuners such as APR, Revo, GIAC and then custom tuners like Recode, Underground Performance and Tarmac Engineering. These places will upload new software to your cars ECU.

Stage 1 is an update to the cars ECU only.

Stage 2 is an ECU update combined with an aftermarket hi-flow downpipe and intake. Upgraded intercooler is optional.

Stage 3 is an upgrade to the larger Golf R turbo with all of the other upgrades mentioned in in stage 2.

Stage 2 sounds the goods for what i would use it for, im guessing you can add a turbo back exhaust? Do they dyno the car with the stage 2?

            Depending on budget

            1) best but most expensive. A custom tune from Recode in Sth Sydney. He will supply a final dyno printout of your results.

            2) APR tune from Muller & Muller. Approx $1100. No dyno but you can get this done elsewhere for $100 or so.

            3) Burger Motorsports JB1 tuning device. Approx $500-600. No dyno but you can get this yourself for $100 or so.

As for the turboback exhaust - this is optional. The main restriction in the exhaust system on these cars is the factory downpipe.

Thanks bud. I have been on recodes website and had a look around.

Are these places just tuners or will they do the mechanical work too?

Am i correct thinking that the downpipe is from the turbo to the cats? If so, this would be changed with a turbo back system?

Whats a good system? Miltek? Xforce?

Sorry if this has been covered in the mk7 sub forum

Ring Mark from Recode and double check - but i think he does do some parts installations. Downpipe replaces the 2x cats thats these cars have and runs about half way between the front and rear wheels. Plenty of exhaust brands to choose from depending on what you want to spend. Have a look at DubAddiction who sell CTS exhausts.

No worries, i will give him a call today.
I cant find all that many, seems milltek is pretty widely used?. I will check out the place you mentioned. I havent figured out a budget yet, i will wait till i get a better understanding of everything first and a price on the car this weekend.

Milltek are fine but quite expensive. I have the CTS exhaust on my Mk6 GTI and it has a good sound and is well made and cheaper than Milltek. CTS are from Canada.

Also consider Unitronic exhausts as they are really nice too.

The biggest thing i am hoping for is to amplify the noise of the gear change with the dsg under open throttle. Thats an amazing sound.

I have watched a few vids on the Akrapovic and the quad tip remus. The akra sounds amazing and the remus looks good with the quad tips, but i think you have to change the rear bumper skirt.

I watched a few unitronic ones as well and they sound pretty good.

Just looked and the Akrapovic is 6.6k lol wow

Akrapovic are unbelieveably expensive. The English and US brands are much more affordable and do the job just fine. Any exhaust will give you more DSG "fart" noise, this can even be made more obvious with the stock exhaust by having your resonator removed (popular thing to do on Polo GTI and Golf GTI).

As far as im aware, the quad tip exhausts will not fit on a GTI without some sort of modification to the bumper or buying a new diffuser. Twin tips look much better IMO...especially on a 4cyl car. Quad tips are a bit much on a 4cyl car.

The lower stance and quad tips are really the only OTT styling elements on the R. And even the tips are partly tucked away beneath the diffuser. I really like that aspect (quad tips).

I did see a modded GTI with aftermarket quad tips and have to say the single tips suit the GTI better. Not sure why but the diffuser shape and slightly higher stance makes the GTI proportions perfect to my eye in standard guise.

I do agree, 2 bigger tips look better on the gti. I got some bad news from my brother in law, he said thay they have stopped making the gti performance..... im not interested in the standard gti.. i have read that the 2017 mk7.5 will come standard with the performance pack so the gti may still be an option for me. This was all overseas reports though so i am unsure if it will apply to us.

Suposidly the 2017 gti was meant to be released at the paris car show this year but i have seen or heard anything yet and i think that the car show is happening now.

It makes it a little hard because i need to order the 162tsi within a month but i wont know any info on the new aussie gti untill almost next year, even then i have read that england wont see the mk7.5 untill half way through the year. Frustrating to say the least lol. I swear im just gunna save my bum off for the next 2 years and buy a C63
