  • Is it worth ceramic coating a DP

I'm getting ready for the next stage of mods and am looking at a downpipe. Is it worth getting the pipe ceramic coated or am I just wasting my money?

Trouble is, there are three different ceramic coatings
The turbo coating application (for high temperature) is also the least durable

For racing and for where you have under bonnet temperature problems, yes, use it, otherwise, not much benefit

From and engineering point of view, on a road car, it is just a waste of money. Its really one of those things that race engineers use to get another 0.1% when all the 0.1%'s add up to something that gives a competitive edge, but unless your in that scenario it doesnt make sense. However, you might want to do it for reasons other than performance.

Dont bother - i coated a dump pipe about 18 months ago for my Golf R (cost about $250 for the best coating) and within months it was chipping off/flaking off and there was zero performance difference.

We used to supply the TurboXS downpipes that we co-designed with the proper Cerakote coating as an option and they seem to hold up very well none I've seen have flaked so far but since early this year I've taken over fabrication of everything and am now having it made at Walker we've had a good look at things and decided it just wasn't worth it. If your using decent thickness true stainless then its not going to do much even if it does lower under bonnet temps a bit.

              What about just heat wrapping?
