Installing aftermarket intake - heat shield required ?

So i just received and (several hours later) installed a neuspeed intake for my golf R

stock google picture:


Now everything went OK, except for the heat shield part. The large rubber "screw" holding it in seems to be different than the European models, in that theirs is cone shaped (thing at the top) where ours is the oppisate, the top bit is thick, therefore making it very difficult to undo

It is the top left in the picture below:


So i ended up not putting in the heat shield that came with the intake

Will this cause any issues ?

Im assuming its there to keep warm air from entering the engine bay, but im hoping its not there to keep the maf safe ?

Input would be appreciated !

Those grey/black plastic screws that hold the stock engine cover on can be removed with a large socket. 21 or 22mm from memory. You could also try a pair of multigrip pliers but you may damage the plastic a bit.

You can re-use the grey/black screws to secure the heat shield if you want, otherwise go grab some M6 bolts that are about 20mm long and they will do the job.

Ah, also the plastic screws at the back of the engine actually have a 10mm nut underneath, so if you undo those first you will find the screws much easier to get off.

No - it will be ok without the heatshield, but seeing you have it, you may as well install it.

I had one installed on my Golf R for a few months. Good trims (about 5%) and no issues with the intake what so ever. Fits well and is nicely made. Better trims than my old VWR intake (but that's not hard). My new intake (AmD) is about the same as the NeuSpeed for trims.

Lots of guys in the USA have reported good fuel trims on the NeuSpeed intakes too (for Golf R engine) which was part of the reason why i bought one.

I got mine landed here for $350 AUD which was the best price i could find (a lot of US parts stores will not sell outside of the US which is just stupid.....why would you turn back a sale??). If you bought 5 or 10 then im sure you could get a better price and also save on shipping.

My guys rate the simple and effective Injen but I've never tried one here I may bring one in for an eval. I have an AMD/AS one like yours coming for another purpose. The only bummer is the exposed pod of course
I pretty much refuse to deal with companies in the US because of what you mention and even if they do ship here there's the complete BS shipping charged.

A few guys in the US tried the Injen and reported less favourable fuel trims (not as good as other intakes). Worth a try though. They look decent too.

As for the AmD intake and exposed filter....problem solved. Good fuel trims too, even better now ive fitted a honeycomb MAF screen. Theres a perfect spot about 5-6cm before the MAF where the silicone pipe tapers down - perfect spot to securely hold the MAF screen in place.

PS: i have the Pipercross foam pod that came with the AmD intake if you need a spare for any reason.

There's pretty much only one correction map you have to modify to correct any air mass reading at the MAF so if you have this sorted properly then you can run whatever you want - like they would have to do with the file every VWR and forge wintake setup.
When you see people commenting on the trims you have to first see if they are running a stock file or not because if they aren't then they may simply be using a corrected file on an intake that didn't require any correction resulting in a similar error.
I like things that behave properly on a stock setup and then go from there.

The thread i am referring to is on the American Vortex forum, so the vast majority of users have a 3L tune (small minority will have United Motorsports/GIAC/Revo - but the vast majority use APR) and most have at least a stage 1 tune, if not higher. Most people who were unlucky enough to buy the Wintake, have sold them off and moved to another brand. The CTS intake is very popular over there now, although i think its ugly and also has the exposed filter. Funnily enough, lots of people not happy with the Volant due to poor trims over there. If you feel like going through all 43 pages you will see feedback from some Injen customers too.
