Yes please any advice would be useful. What more pics would you like as that's all I could get. The car is up on the ramp and could not be moved. The mechanic is back from his course today so I'm assuming they will recommence the job today pending parts. I am told by VW HQ in the UK that they won't back down in this case due to the remap and I feel they've been through a similar scenario before!
Only this piston was removed and I'm sure the main block is still on the car hence not being able to see them. All oil and coolant plus filter was done during the last service 2 months ago and the previous service before that was 12 months before that.
My usual drive is approximately 30 miles a week for the school run and work commuting. I also do a 200 mile motorway drive once a month too.
Standard VW protocol is to replace the components and not repair hence the cost but like you guys I'm pretty shocked and angry at the extent of damage caused. I've been advised taking legal action against VW will not work and that I have to go after the tuner now who as you know simply wants to wash his hands of it. It's not as if it's just the cost of the remap I'm losing - that I could stomach and put down to a bad experience. I'm talking £5.5k which is going to hurt me for a long time!2011 Candy White Tiguan R Line 170 TDI DSG | Pan roof | Park assist & RVC | RNS 510 | MDI | LED's | 20" RS5 Wheels| Bi-xenons & AFS | Front & Rear footwell lights | Door warning & puddle lights | Mirror puddle lights | LED Tail lamps | Eibach Pro-Kit Springs

Pretty suspicious if it has only done one bearing that bad. My first thought was oil pressure? Although maybe the bearing was duff from manufacture and was destined to fail pretty soon anyway?Originally posted by Transporter View Postagree, plus within 100 miles in the winter conditions?

If you're paying, then you can dictate what VW do. Full engine or fix that one, it's your choice. They like the engine because it's fast for them.
As it's still unclear what failed though, it's not the right time to make the call.
What are the other big ends like? They can just take the caps off, no need to pull the piston out and add 3 more sets of rings to the job.

For sure, any good mechanic would check all the bearings, remove the pistons and check them as well when the engine is already open, since it's not that much of the work and the result and reliabilty of the repair depends on that all the affected components are inspected and replaced if needed.
Because, if the engine fails second time and possibly in short time after they've worked on it, it won't look good and they workmanship would be questioned.
Of course they will most likely use the same excuse that the engine was tuned before and they just couldn't xray every component, and because of that I would want to start with the new engine and have it in writing that they will warranty it fully. Otherwise, you could be just wasting your money with them.
I'm not saying that's why the engine failed, but your trips are quite short and you should change the engine oil and the filter every 6 months. If you drive 5 times per week and total only 30 miles and then 200 miles on the weekend. The soot in the oil will acumulate and won't get boiled off like the polutants from the petrol engine when you take your car for a longer drive.Performance Tunes from $850Wrecking RS OCTAVIA 2 Link

A written report would be useful if the dealer had the balls to return my phone calls and messages. They've been avoiding me like the plague. Absolutely disgusting behaviour for a main VW dealer!2011 Candy White Tiguan R Line 170 TDI DSG | Pan roof | Park assist & RVC | RNS 510 | MDI | LED's | 20" RS5 Wheels| Bi-xenons & AFS | Front & Rear footwell lights | Door warning & puddle lights | Mirror puddle lights | LED Tail lamps | Eibach Pro-Kit Springs

I suspect there's some ass covering going on. If this is the same dealer that has done your services then if there were problems here (like no oil change or wrong oil) then this would explain the reason the bearing failed. It would then come back to the dealer to fund the new engine.
Seriously get an independent assessment and a written report.
I wouldn't be authorising any work until this was done and the primary cause of failure found.

Yes exactly, but despite all my efforts the dealer refuses to answer my calls or return any of my messages. As a result I have now escalated this further. Any party at fault will be named and shamed for the sake of our fellow public.Originally posted by tigger73 View PostI wouldn't be authorising any work until this was done and the primary cause of failure found.2011 Candy White Tiguan R Line 170 TDI DSG | Pan roof | Park assist & RVC | RNS 510 | MDI | LED's | 20" RS5 Wheels| Bi-xenons & AFS | Front & Rear footwell lights | Door warning & puddle lights | Mirror puddle lights | LED Tail lamps | Eibach Pro-Kit Springs

They have probably received legal advice not to talk to you anymore.Originally posted by Naresh View PostYes exactly, but despite all my efforts the dealer refuses to answer my calls or return any of my messages. Why would that be? So they can sue me for naming them?Originally posted by tigger73 View PostThey have probably received legal advice not to talk to you anymore.2011 Candy White Tiguan R Line 170 TDI DSG | Pan roof | Park assist & RVC | RNS 510 | MDI | LED's | 20" RS5 Wheels| Bi-xenons & AFS | Front & Rear footwell lights | Door warning & puddle lights | Mirror puddle lights | LED Tail lamps | Eibach Pro-Kit Springs

Nah probably if you've told them that you're getting legal advice then they've probably decided not to talk to you other than through lawyers. I'm not saying this is definitely what is happening, however it's a possibility.Originally posted by Naresh View PostWhy would that be? So they can sue me for naming them?
Also it may be that it's been put in the "too hard basket" and you may need to go and talk to the service manager/dealership principal/warranty manager at VW to get things moving.

So is it still only one bearing that has failed and nothing else at all ? total BS on the dealers part if that's the case

That's all I could see damagaged from my photographs and the diagnosis for a new short engine was given after only one of the pistons was taken out. The remaining 3 are still on the car as is the cylinder block.Originally posted by parso_rex View PostSo is it still only one bearing that has failed and nothing else at all ? total BS on the dealers part if that's the case
Have been promised call backs from the dealer since last Wednesday (7 days ago) but since then nothing! So I'm no clearer on whay has failed and why, apart from telling me, "you car has been chipped", "you have no warranty", "it will cost £5,500 to repair" (estimated!)2011 Candy White Tiguan R Line 170 TDI DSG | Pan roof | Park assist & RVC | RNS 510 | MDI | LED's | 20" RS5 Wheels| Bi-xenons & AFS | Front & Rear footwell lights | Door warning & puddle lights | Mirror puddle lights | LED Tail lamps | Eibach Pro-Kit Springs
