Viezu Motorsport Tune Results

Hey guys,

A few months back I had my MKV GTI tuned with a Viezu motorsport tune, everything else is stock except for some non power gaining mods (PCV, DV and boost gauge) and run it on the dyno before and after the tune. I was wondering if any one else has this tune and has had it dyno'd as some results to compare to would be great.

I have mixed feelings about the results of the tune, on one hand it feels much stronger in 2nd & 3rd gear, 4th also feels better but is not as noticeable, you can feel the car pulling like a Boss when it hit's boost at around 3-4k then you really notice the revs climb as the car urges forward.

However I haven't really noticed a drop in 0-100 times by much at all, according to my Bosch 'Light Em Up dyno' app (I know it's not omgsuperaccurate) I managed a 6.7 with launch control taking off at about 2-2.5k, but the extra torque just spins through all of first gear if you don't take it easy on the throttle. I know that the lack of traction is killing my times but for some reason I thought it would be able to manage low 6's to the 0-100 dash . I haven't had a chance to take it to the track or strip yet but will hopefully get a chance in the coming months to really see what performance I can get out of it.

But back to the dyno runs, my stock car managed 125.8kw @wheels which makes a drivetrain loss of around 14-15% from the engines quoted 147kw.

My Motorsport tune managed a best of 151.6kw @wheels which seemed a little low. The tune is meant to deliver an extra 53kw and 100nm making it 200kw @engine, if you subtract the drive train loss of 14-15% as shown by my baseline dyno I should be making roughly 170kw @wheels.

I think 170kw's feels a little too high for just a tune, but the 150kw's seem's too low for the power I am meant to be gaining from the tune.

The dyno graph for the motorsport tune doesn't have a very nice curve to it like my stock tune did, not sure if this is a problem though....

Overall I am happy that the car feels faster, but I think that it should be performing somewhat better than it is.

I will add my dyno print out's when I get a chance to scan them.

If anyone has this tune on a GTI I would love to hear about their results and impressions.

Mate if you are anything less than happy, TALK to your local dealer - Miro - as the whole point of Viezu is they can tweak the tune as much as you want, for FREE. Heck I'm on about version 7 of my own TDI's tune, and each one has been quite different. Simon is running a MKV GTI race car up in Cairns, and I know the tune on it is bloody insane.....but yep, you would have even more traction problems. Sounds like you need to be contemplating some better tyres and a few suspension mods to get the power down!

Yes, I wish that people would contact me before they complain. In short the GTI had done over 95,000km and yes there were some faults logged in memory as a result of the air leak, which we cleared when the faulty part was fixed the minute before the tune install by the OP.

You're more than welcome to come to me for check up and we can reload the tune if needed.

Please bounce me an email personally and we'll check your car over. However in short;

What was the dyno used on the runs?

And what was the temp?

120-125kw stock is about right on these, but as with anything - dyno's vary massively. Viezu's R&D centre dyno is temperature controlled to maintain scientific results, and has some serious high speed fans to maintain a more accurate level of air flow and therefore results.

Our Mark6 GTi's coupled to our 3" DP are pushing 170KW at one of our Sydney Dealers (BMR Autowerkes) - and we can push the mark 5 motor harder currently. We have VARdesign DP's on Special at the moment btw down to $599 (!) with a Tune (or to existing Viezu tune customers!)

However;

It's odd yours is only manic top end, as, sure these are fast top end, but 2500rpm- 5000rpm is the bulk of the savagery in terms of gains. That's where you'll see as high as 100nm extra and 70hp. The on peak gains are more like in the 50's hp, but still, your output seems to be more in line with our own car up here with just the straight Performance level of tune. (which ran 151kw on SVS's MainLine dyno). The vRace files are waaaaay faster. Ballistic missile type stuff.

Mainline dyno's can be notoriously hard to please, for example, - they even put our Porsche at about a 25% driveline loss when industry standard puts them around 15%. But even so let's take a look at it, as you should be having a wall of torque from 2500 when it comes on boost, if not sooner. The little KO3 turbo can start running out of puff at very high revs - so yours doesn't sound quite right.

The first things to check are boost leaks, error codes - has your car had any issues? Get the piping checked - that thing will be pushing 21psi boost on the vRACE file - it's the most you'd ever want to put through the KO3 without causing reduced longevity of the turbo.

FWD cars will struggle for grip with more power. To combat it you're going to need some high quality tyres. Ours had some cheap ones on when we bought the car and it could barely cope with stock power. Performance levels are manageable as it's more linear, but forget traction on the more aggressive 'make it as fast as you can' type tunes. Better tyres have helped, but 1st gear is always an problem as it's so short geared.

Sometimes owners want different things from their tune - if you want a little more low down, earlier boost, less aggressive, more aggressive, or a sprint booster type altered throttle map - all these things can be done to meet your requirements. On another note - we're actually testing a new more complex free-light-dsg tune on DSG's now following the success story of the Audi S3 and Golf 'R' dsg tune we do as a free inclusion. It's make your car even quicker, shift faster, smoother, and give you even more torque through.

Mind you if your problem is wheel spin, this won't help and the car will be even faster....

It'll be much nicer and better to drive once you're out of first gear though.

Dynolicious is a good App to try too - that puts ours (dry road, good grip, new tyres, LC at 3000rpm) around 6 seconds, but it's not something we'd quote as it's not scientific. Great fun though ! Tyres are key. Especially if you're looking at more mods after the tune too. Our CAI and TBE adds significantly to these - then there's a 'where do I stop' thought - we're doing big turbo conversions and all sorts. You'd need a LSD then or you'd never get any traction.

150kw is bang on what you should be seeing with a stage 1 file on a mk5 GTI.
Dont be confused by claims like "gains of up to 50kw" It wont always mean that you will have 50kw extra peak power. Sometimes this may happen in another part of the rev range. Not bagging Viezu as I havent really read any of their marketing material although I do know of one other tuner than chooses to make things sound extremely impressive on paper.

At the end of the day it sounds like your car is making good power and you need to work on your launches/do some traction mods to get more out of the car. 170kw is the most you will ever get out of your little turbo once you do all the other bolt on mods. Exhaust, intercooler, intake etc.

LOL Greg ! Yes we've tested well into double figures on ours. Tech are genius. You want it, they write it. Love it.

Just for general feedback (this will all be on the builds section of the new website shortly)

Economy Tune - economical, ridiculously smooth, and more economical (as you'd expect...)

Economy blend/ Performance tune - smooth, quicker than stock, more economical than stock, with more power, but linear and not crazy.

Performance (+40hp and +85Nm) feels very 'remapped' - linear, punchy, smooth, fast. Lots of torque, in typical Viezu ethos. This is my wife's favourite tune on the car. Like stock in every respect, only faster when you want it. It was also about 10% more eco than stock for the several thousand km we tested it. Similar to stage one tunes from the best competitors on power, but typically with Viezu = more torque.

Motorsport/Race. (+70hp and +100Nm ... 70hp is mid range) Make no mistake - this is a Motorsport file. Yes it's still covered by all the awesomeness - insurance backed guarantees, ISO quality controlled development etc etc etc etc, but yes it's still nice to drive when you want to chill, and fuel economy is a little better than stock when you're chilling - but - when you're into it it's aggressive, it's fast, it'll use more fuel and it's savage. It'll also wear out your tyres more. The cheap ones we had on our when we bought it were shredded in weeks. Good quality ones will cope with the extra grunt more though and will last longer....

Might not even 'need' a tweak as such - but to suit his requirements we can certainly tweak it. We just need the data logs off it to check it, but assuming the file is exactly what Tech intended, we can alter the characteristics for the owner if he'd like. Have emailed you mate

Firstly I would like to say I am not complaining about the tune, I can really feel the difference in midrange pull, it really is a chalk and cheese difference and I am Uber happy with it, from 3k to 5k it is pure Blitzkrieg, I love the feeling and the noise when she is on boost. However it seemed to be a little less than I was maybe expecting in lower and higher RPM ranges, I often expect too much from everything in life and was wondering if I was doing the same again with my Motorsport Tune.

My post was meant to merely see if people had this tune and what power/performance gains they have and have felt from it.

I didn't want to trouble Miro the amazing SA dealer for Viezu if I was off on what to expect from my tune, He did a great job and is a fantastic guy, as I'm sure are all the people who are working with Viezu in Australia. I highly recommend Viezu tunes from a customer service stand point.

Now for my dyno runs.

They were done in the afternoon around 4pm in July for the Stock run and August for the Motorsport Tune run, so I am guessing that ambient was somewhere between 13c and 15c (I checked weather database site), they were done on a DYNO DYNAMICS dyno.





So there is definitely a gain in performance as can be seen in the dyno graph, maybe my car has some issues that are causing it to not run at it's full potential or the dyno monkey's didn't do the runs properly, I guess there are a bazillion and 44 factors that affect these things.

I wonder if your stock diverter valve (DV) is leaking and causing the up's and down's on your dyno graph as it leaks boost? This is a very common issue in the Mk5 GTI's and can be replaced with a more durable revised OEM valve for around $90 or so. Have a look at Dubaddiction.com.au as he sells them.

My mate also has the Viezu motorsport tune on his MK5 GTI and the tune soon made us aware of some factory parts that were no longer up to the task (despite a full service history) after 4 years and 70,000km such as:

- diverter valve leaking (the internal diaphram had a small rip in it which was leaking boost. Replaced with new one from Dubaddiction)
- PCV valve died (replaced with Eurojet block off plate)
- coils failing and causing intermittent mis-fire (new coils fitted)

The car runs well now. Ive been trying to get him to throw it on a dyno to not only see what power its making, but to check the a/f ratios etc, but no luck so far.

Have they not got a plot of the AFRs to check in conjunction with the power.

Doesn't need to go on a dyno to check them. You can get a good output from VCDS.
