Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • TurboXS Dump Pipe and Recode Tuning for Golf R

Hi Fellow Golf R Nutters, i mean enthusiasts,

Just thought i might fill you in on yet another alternative to the usual overpriced suspects in the market...

I have spoken to Mark from Recode aka Port Hacking Automotive and they will be performing their final tests on the TurboXS Dump pipe along with the Recode Tune hopefully tomorrow.

Mark seems to be a very knowledgeable and genuine bloke and same goes for the guys at TurboXS so initial impressions are good. Can't wait for the final results.

If their existing products for Subies etc are anything to go by then we should be in for some very nice and competitive products!!
Absolutely loving my Golf R and hearing the Miss' scream when it come's on boost!!

Hi Guys, just came across this thread, I think I spoke to you last week KRA2IE.
Things still have a little way to go and I wont be up there this week as I may have mentioned, the car(s) might be fitted up though.
The dump and centre section have to go through a testing process first the ensure it fits a number of vehicles properly and if necessary any modifications made to correct any issues. Once thats done its then ready for production. After this it usually doesn't take too long for it to become available. At the moment its frustrating as there is certainly a definite interest but nothing is actually available.. just yet.

For ourselves its then back to the dyno (either their's or our own) on both the manual and DSG cars to get some tuning revisions done to suit these dumps. In short you have to modify the wastegate tables in order to keep boost control happy so its a bit of stuffing around but once this is done you're right to go. So far we have quite a few brands covered.
Regarding pricing for the dumps and systems I still have no idea myself but they should be very worthwhile alternative for us in Oz

I know they have expressed an interest in offering some other hardware for both the GTI, R and Audi TFSI's too but more on that later.

      Cheers

      Mark

Sounds good and I'd rather spend my money on an Australian developed/made product than buy something from Europe or USA.

Looking forward to the finished product.

First pipe was fitted to my car today. Took it for a spin around the block tonight and I'm happy with it . Turbo seems to spool up even faster than with the APR DP that was on previously. Just wish it had been ready for the Sydney dyno day and I would have had the highest powered R . Just have to have some fine tuning done by Mark then get back out to EC and crack into the 12's.

Is an ECU map required with fitting the DP like this? or can it be fitted to a stock R without any other mods?

We'll be able to answer that in a couple of weeks. Mark still has my standard file and we want to do some fine tuning to the current file so will load the standard file to see what happens. I know when we were testing with the APR DP it made no difference power wise with just a DP and no tune but the graph definitely isn't as smooth. The factory wastegate control map assumes that there is the restriction of the cat straight after the turbo outlet. With the DP there isn't that restriction so you actually get boost coming on quicker then the wastegate opens and boost drops then wastegate closes and builds boost, etc. The result is that the dyno graph has a series of steps in it rather than smooth like it is standard. I would definitely recommend getting a tune done along with the DP. Mark said he could actually do something that just fixed up the wastegate actuation but once you've experienced a proper tune you definitely wouldn't want to go back.

I should be able to make that date. Hopefully will have the fine tuning done by then as well. Will be interesting to compare our 2 cars on the same night considering how close they were at the dyno day.

With any aftermarket dump-pipe out there installed on an otherwise stock car you may experience Cat efficiency trouble codes as they all use higher flowing cats that can make the system think that a catalyst has failed. The solution can be as simple as a 42DD angled O2 sensor adapter or a similar option and they work very well. Most of the better tune options out there now will (cough..) 'fix' this issue in the tuned file so it never gives you any grief. No O2 sensor issues from us.
Apart from thats is pretty much what Zbeast has already mentioned regarding boost control (he's almost got it right) you may see a gain but that would be due to a boost spike more so than improved flow. The stock system seems to be OK up to a point and beyond that you need to start changing things and you'll see your gains

That is about what I'd expect to pay for a full exhaust. Photos would be good!
