Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Cheers Josh,

Just took it out for a test drive, the new clutch is fine on the street although it does bite real hard if you lift off a bit too quick.

Not too heavy under foot and quite drivable.

    No more alarming noises.

Might have a go at the shift linkages, 2nd is a bit too hard to find at the moment.

Think I'll send off an entry for Phillip Island Sprints on Monday

    Pete

I'd say that the leak was present on the dyno run, since it's not possible for a valve to suddenly adjust itself tighter on the way home. It is feasible the other way around - ie, a shim dislodges or breaks in half thus giving you extra tappet clearance. Happy to be corrected on this line of thinking.

End result is that you should have a fair bit more power than was recorded on the dyno on 3 cylinders.

      • Yeah, I'm sort of drawing the same conclusion. Just kicking myself now for not checking things properly in the first place.

Shimming was fun - the base circle diameter on this cam is smaller than stock and the shims are very thick because of it. They're in the range of 3.8 through to 4.4. Trouble is I really need a 4.5 for one of the inlets and the stock ones top out at 4.25.

There's a local shim specialist in Croydon, I'll see if they can make me up an assortment of oversize shims.

            • Posted off the Entry form for the Phillip Island Sprints on Sunday Feb 14th.

I also picked up some cutom made valve shims during the week from this enterprising gentleman.

Now I'll be able to get all the clearances spot on rather than near enough.

I needed shims above the normal range which tops out at 4.25mm

Yep. Not quite sure how much of the fleet is coming yet. At least 2 I'd say.

                  • Off to the Island tomorrow,

Just a few little things to do today.

                    • Pull out the street seats and re-fit race seat & harness
                    • Centre the steering wheel
                    • Adjust valve lash now that I've got the right shims
                    • Adjust the shift linkages or move the motor.
                    • Pack it all up and hitch up the trailer.

Should be interesting..... +20Hp, shorter diff ratio and LSD

Let's see how good this wavetrac diff is!

                              • All packed up now.

I installed my EMPI shifter, figured if I was going to stuff about adjusting the linkages I may as well.

Oddly I just put in and got it right on the first go Gets all 5 gears better than before. Reverse is locked out by the pull up collar.
