It Begins: The S3 1.8T into my '85 Mk2 GTI

  • This was done a little while ago, but here's the fuel pump/filter mount-up i did. It's not a show stopper of a job, but it's a job!

    Was better than this cable tied mess!!!



    I basically used the existing mounting locations from the original (now deleted) accumulator setup, and just screwed up some aluminuim plate with rubber and foam 'bushings' to attempt to reduce the extreme noise that Bosch 044 pump makes









    And yes, i did replace the gaffa tape and put on some proper wiring shrink sleeve!

      • ...and wiring up the ciggy lighter.

        How it was, as with any Aussie spec mk2 GTI the hole os blanked





        This is the back of the lighter and you can see in the next pic, the terminal that was hanging there already doesnt match.





        Soooo, i removed the plastic terminal to expose just the wires with their spade connectors, and soldered up some extra length to reach down.





        And bango, a lighter that works!!



        Its not rocket science a la peter jones, but its so nice having things like this all working properly again. It feels like a brand new car inside now

                  • hah. I cant make up my mind. I love the RS' but they are so done to death. from a distance in the right light the BMW E30 ones i painted look sweet too.
                    One day when i can afford it i'll buy another pair of RS001's...

                    • On the dyno again today. Hopefully for the last time in a while after the new injectors are in. Aiming for around 300bhp at the flywheel heheh

                          I really love that people can get a smile from the car, or learn something thru my own ups and down during the build, and that you can do it if you keep focused and going.

                          The power increase wasnt huge today in the end. We managed 265hp at the front wheels and increased torque, and with these bigger injectors they're only running at 70% duty cycle.

                          The bad news is the K04 is now being pushed to its maximum (around 19psi at peak), and today confirmed what i'd been fearing for a while. The turbo has been showing signs of tiredness and today its started seeping a little oil thru the charge piping when hot. There was some reasonable engine knock and there's also been heaps of black chaff out the exhaust lately. All this means a near dead turbo feeding warm oily charge air into the combustion chamber.
                          It actually also explains the black plugs and piston tops.

                          I'll have a look at my spare k04 and see whether its worth refurbing and putting on, or just getting a Garrett GT2560R (GT28R)??
                          The tuner also mentioned a disco potato?? Any thoughts???

                          Anyway, its also much smoother than before to drive so I'm happy for now
