I know for a fact it needed the CV joints being replaced amongst the other mechanical woes the poor thing had haha.. Just an idea. Excuss me if i'm incorrect though haha, still learning about the mechanics of cars.
Nah mate, Cv's are only 12months old and it's not that clicking CV noise. It's only from up and down movement over sudden bumps and sounds like the strut top is knocking or rattling up and down against the top mounts, but that has all been checked & replaced already to no avail.
Actually, when i put new strut top mounts in the noise was gone for about half an hour before gradually returning - 'tok-a-tokatok-clunk-atoktok...'
Is evorobin still around on here?

    • Hey mate,

i had similar problems in my mk3 for quite a while. I replaced the strut tops a few times and tried different options, but in the end I realised it was just a result of the strut top falling back out of the housing against the retaining cap, and then reseating again. This was mainly because even though I was originally using the heavy duty mounts, I still used the standard retaining cup rather than the thicker, heavier vr6 retainer with the rubber ring around the outside. The root cause for the strut to come back out ofcourse being stiff shock absorbers that have a high rebound damping coefficient.

So, my question for you is - what retainer are you using?

Ah fair enough hey. That makes sense then.
Well, as far as the CV joints go..
I'm not sure at all then. I hope you work it out soon though! Also.. Finally got a phone man, i'll message you my number if I still have yours, so next time you're down Bunbury way send us a message if you want!

By retainer, do you mean the cup right at the top (in the engine bay)? I checked out the part numbers for those and the 2.0litre GL mk3 has the same ones as the VR6.

I already pinched them off my fiance's car and they made no difference. Still rattles.

          • Well, i think i finally improved this maddening rattle. It's not totally gone, but its heaps better.

I just took out the whole mk2 top mount setup and replaced it with the VR6/GL mk3 stuff...

So, new BOGE mk3 mount on right, buggered Lemfoerder mk2 mount on left...

Stupid mk2 collared retaining nut on left, better mk3 22mm bearing nut on right

I had to sacrifice a 14mm socket to make the tool to remove the collared nut. Took 15 mins to butcher it with the dremel, and 2 seconds to remove the nut

So, after whipping off the top of the shocks, i wound the coils down a bit to expose a bit more thread..

Then on goes the bearing and the nut on top...

Then poke the mount up in the tower and bolt it down with the mk3 cup

            Job done.

Put the mk2 cups on Sarah's car where i pinched the mk3 ones heheh.

Got some fancy new trims from ebay too. Pics coming soon...

                • So, while i'm waiting for my new turbo to arrive ive started on the much needed cosmetics.

I got a quote for a respray for plus spare doors & bonnet for ~$5000.

And got these finally after waiting for 18 months!!! They're Genuine brand new old stock '86 GTI door mouldings (the stick-on rubber ones).
Probably the last complete set sold brand new in the world. $160 for the set.

Genuine rear badge, and sill tread cover clips. Nothing major but it all adds up

And i was gonna try and get this Interlagos mk5 GTI fabric fitted to the mk2 seats, but there's not enough material to work with

                      • Just had a read through from page 1 and i have to congratulate you on an excellent build, very well thought through and well executed.

Hybrid built 20vt's in volkwagens are the best of fun, i love my 20V AGU in my mk3 jetta.

I saw a few placed that you keep mentioning you have a rattle or knock on ur suspension that you cant seem to locate, you are still running the polyurethane control arm bushes right?

Cheers sidey glad you like it!

Yea i'm still running poly bushes in the front end. The mk3 top mount setup seems to have fixed the knock/rattle. It still does it occasionally over bad bumps but nowhere near as bad as it was.

My new OEM turbo has arrived and it'll be going in over the next few weeks along with a new 'sprintercooler'.

                          Pics soon.
