  • How bad is this do you guys think ? Should I keep going.

    Mk1 project has been slow, eventually I pulled out all seat and carpet.

    This is how it looks, do you guy think I should continue or dump it to junk yard ?

    Folk in the UK would stop due to a bit of rust. I have repaired worse than you have there. See how bad it is once cleaned up properly, the wheel well is a common problem.

    Maybe try and get a section from a good well to weld in. Same with the floor if it looks really bad.

      time for a wire brush and much time me thinks.

      If it has an engine or heartbeat it's going to cost you.

        What rust? I can't anything in those shots to be worried about. It all looks like surface rust.

        I can see a perforation in the spare wheel recess but I personally wouldn't worry too much about that it's fairly easily fixed and not structural.

        For a daily hack I'd just glass it if you don't have access to welding gear, The key is to stop the leaks that caused the rust in the first place.

            Yeah I have repaired worse mate.
            Wire brush, or drill attachment, the some rust proofing paint and some fibreglass filler.

            A hole in the middle of the wheelwell is a good idea to let the water out.

              stop?! gah.. never! well maybe sometimes, but not in this case! my four and a half cents - wire brush to get rid of surface rust, sand, poly filler of sorts if needed, rust kill paint (or similar) and she'll be sweet i'd say

                Big Red.

                They wouldn't happen to be ATS teledial wheels by any chance?

                Speaking from past & present experience, I'd remove the sound proofing from the wheel well's/arches.

                Ozzy built car's didn't have very much seam sealer at all & water got through the joint's & can rust out the wheel well joint's, both inside the cabin & inside the wheel arches.

                Just finished sealing my ol 76er up.

                I'll get a pic up tomorrow.

                    keep it going mate, my bug's floor pan looked a mess until i got stuck into it with rust killer and a wire wheel

                      Pic update.

                      Here are the pic's I said to look at. This is a pretty common area on the 76er's.

                      I'd remove/scrap (it's pretty hard stuff. May need to take to it with a heat gun.) the sound deadening & have a look. I'd also suggest to seam seal inside the engine bay too, along the same seam. Also seal up the brake line firewall grommet's as they can leak too!

                      As that was the same case with my 76!



                      It may look messy, but it no longer leak's any water from anyway period!
                      Also the carpet will cover it all up too.

                        Check the brake pipes and replace too if they are rusty. It is common for them to rust through. I had a golf a while ago that someone repaired the lines with fuel hose to get rid of the affected pipes!!! That was as dangerous a job as I have seen!!!

                            Anyone know what is the most efficient way to remove the bitumen stuff in the floor (are they for sound deadening ?), I have been chisel/hammer them out, I may be dump

                              Heat Gun & a good sharp scraper through & through.

                              Recently had to do this myself.

                              Don't heat the soundproofing up too much as it turn's really stringy & gluey. Just enough to make it warm & it should remove without too much effort.

                              When it come's to sealing it all up, the place you want to start at is in the engine bay. That's were the problem start's from. Were the strut tower's join upto the firewall.
