VW: it aint just a car, its a way of life There are few things more satisfying in life than finding a solution to a problem and implementing it

yea sure does preeny. Cheers mate. This is the bearing just under the cap yea?
Dom, it's hard to see... accelerating is a bit of a tough one in a GLD rememeber...
Yeah there's two bearings. One at the front, one at the back. Even if it looks fine it's probably still knackered.
You need to take the cap off and take the split pin out, then undo the nut. The drum then comes out/off.
You'll need to knock the outer races out with a pin punch and a hammer, from the inside out. By that, i mean you have to push them out from the opposite side if you get what i'm trying to say. Make sure you tap it one side, then the other etc to keep it square as it comes out.
Once they're out, give the whole lot a good clean and bash the new races back in the same way. Don't worry about hurting the race hitting it back in.. You won't.
Then you need to pack the bearings as i've stated earlier. When you reassemble the whole lot, you want to put just a little bit of pre load on the bearings, enough to put just a little resistance on the drum when you rotate it.. So you want it to be "firm", not "tight".
your odometer will be easy to fix, just pull out the clocks and take the back off your speedo panel and there is a small worm gear set. I bet the driving gear for the odometer has slipped clear of the worm gear. You can just tap it back on and it will work.
If you wasnt a more permanent fix, maybe add a drop of superglue or something to keep it on there.
Bearings are easy, just take your time and don't tighten the nut too much. If you have a manual, read the procedure for checking the play in the bearing.
I've fixed up a few things since last post. still have a bearing noise [only half as bad now]. looks like I"ll need to whack the inner bearing out as well and re pack that, or do a swapsy with the 76er even.
Fixed up the odo, well didn't fix it cause I couldnt' be bother, so I used the one outta my 76er as well.
Last "tank" [only 200 odd clicks] I got a fuel econ of 6.00L/100km. Which I was a tad disappointed with. It was a fair mix of driving though including heaving traffic, freeway, and a fair amount of sooting people
Something I need to do tomorrow, in prep for the road trip, is take a few spares and tools. Any one have any recommendations?
So far it's:
oil
water
spare hoses
fuses
tow rope
spare tyre
cable ties [of course]
