Supercheap Auto has 60% off Castrol Edge Titanium 5W30 and 5W40 on sale this weekend only. Super Cheap Auto Catalogues
That's a great price but for those of you that are anal about using 504/507 spec oils, Edge Titanium A3/B4 is 502/505.
I've done about 4 oil changes using the old Edge Sport 502.00 - 2x on 15k intervals & 2x on 7.5k intervals & I can't think of any reason not to use Edge Titanium 5w-30 or 5w-40 (both are 502/505).
The Edge FST 5w-30 504/507 stuff is $58.87 for those that wish to stick with that. Still a good price. Surprisingly there appears to be a 0w-40 with 504/507 approval but I can't see it on the Castrol website so probaly SCA have made a typo.
Similar at Supercheap with 20% off. While the bottle claims VW504/507, there is not a single Castrol specification document I can find yet that says this or when they changed it. Available specs describe the previous version as not for DPF and failing API SM and SN due to high phosphorus. Presume they figured how to get the phosphorus down for the revised version....
Check the label very carefully, since there are different Castrol Edge 5W-30's and they don't all meet VW507 spec.
Castrol documentation is a nightmare. I have downloaded 7 versions of a data sheet claiming to apply to Castrol Edge 5W-30. None are very clear on what they describe and they are all a bit different. Two claim VW507 compliance, one with filename -FST (27/7/2011) and the other unspecified. Current Castroledge UK website says the -FST version only complies with VW505. Current Australian Castroledge site also says VW505 for Castrol Edge 5W-30 A3/B4.
Google managed to find me the specification dated 21/2/2013 that says:
"Castrol have developed EDGE 5W-30 in co-operation with the VW Group. This oil sets new standards in the industry in regards to cleanliness of the engine, thereby reducing harmful emissions and subsequent damage to the environment. The technology in this oil also reduces long term blocking thereby prolonging the life of the diesel particulate filter. Castrol EDGE 5W-30 is equally suitable for gasoline and diesel vehicles where performance specifications VW 504 00 and 507 00 are demanded. In addition to its cleaning properties, EDGE 5W-30 antiwear technology provides strong protection for modern FSI, TDI and turbocharged engines. EDGE 5W-30 is also approved for use in modern BMW and Mercedes gasoline and diesel engines including those equipped with a DPF that require BMW Longlife -04 or MB-Approval 229.51."
I have been to SCA this afternoon and took some photos for Castrol Edge FST 5W-30 5L oil. This specific container is fatter compared to the rest Castrol.
Although VW 504/507 can be found on the back (see photo below), but it's not clear whether this oil has been approved by VW.
Did a quick search on Castrol Australia for my polo, it seems the oil listed there is the same one I found in SCA. Castrol Australia - NetLube
Did you look at the castrol web site product info?
Castrol EDGE 5W-30 is approved for use in VW Group vehicles that require a VW 504 00 / 507 00 5W-30 lubricant including diesel vehicles equipped with a diesel particulate filter. Castrol EDGE 5W-30 also fulfils the requirements of former VW 503 01 specification.
carandimage The place where Off-Topic is On-Topic I used to think I was anal-retentive until I started getting involved in car forums
Refer to ebay, SuperCheapAutos has listed this oil as "Castrol Edge Diesel DPF Engine Oil - 5W-30, 5 Litre - Super Cheap Auto", you can search that to find the price, $58.99 is still valid at the moment (10 Oct 2015). So called 21% off, you may find it cheaper if you are not in a hurry.
