TDI engines without PD or CR only requires 505.00

PD TDI and CR TDI engines require either 505.01 or 506.01, depending on the vehicle and service regime.

507.00 is required for any TDI engine with a DPF, as 507.00 is a reduced-SAPS lubricant (it is not an ash-free lubricant).

507.00 also supersedes all previous oil standards, so it can be used where 505.00, 505.01 or 506.01 is specified (except for certain R5 TDI and V10 TDI engines).

    ...

Like the majority of Volkswagen's oil standards, 504.00/507.00 is a dual specification, which consists of a petrol spec (504.00) and a diesel spec (507.00) and is only allowed to be released onto the market as a dual-rated lubricant. VW won't approve any product unless it meets both specs.

But 'suitable' and 'approved' are not the same

When they do penrite 'approved' one on special it sells for $60-$65 after discount.

Personally I wouldn't touch it without the correct word on the label

Anyway I use only Enviro+ even when serviced at a dealers.

          I always provide my own.

$69 against the dealers $118 for Castrol is a win win.

One of the new Valvoline oils is apparently approved.

Previously, they used to recommend an oil that was so far from spec, that it was ridiculous.

I thought the XL-III was an approved oil as per below?

It's what my dealer used when I was still going there.

Valvoline site is ambiguous as it uses the term "Approvals / Performance levels"

I just had one of our Fabias serviced and the dealer used the Valvoline Synpower XL 3 it was on the docket and when I spoke to the mechanic he said that and the Castrol Edge are effectively identical in spec . They used Castrol Edge on my Fabia when I serviced it before
