Shell Helix Ultra Extra 5W30 is usually pretty cheap from there.

None of the Castrol oils they stock are 504/507-approved.

Castrol Edge A3/B4 0W-40, Castrol Edge A3/B4 5W-30 and Castrol Edge SN 5W-40 lubricants are 502.00/505.00 approved.

To my knowledge, Castrol's 504.00/507.00 lubricants are only available direct via distributors or Audi/Skoda/Volkswagen dealers.

"The Castrol Tiitanium 5w-30 does not appear on the approved list"

The reason I mentioned it was because it was 5w 30 and in the catalogue, nothing else.

Just in case someone mistook it for the Professional III which is the approved one

the 5w-30 edge titanium is vw502.00 approved if you check your manual, or at least in my tiguan and gti manual both say vw502.00 oil is ok to use.

but whenever possible, use the latest vw504.00 oil that you can easily get from SCA (eg: penrite enviro 5w-30, shell helix ultra extra 5w-30).

They say you can use 502 oil YES but they mean APPROVED oil and Castrol Titanium is not in the list on ERWIN list of approved oils
and its Penrite Enviro + (plus) The approved oils have a sticker or a stamp on the container saying so .

Some have SUITABLE FOR which is not the same and are NOT approved EG NULON oils

Pics of the two oils I have

This one I bought from the dealer so I guess its the right one

Again, Castrol Edge A3/B4 0W-40, Castrol Edge A3/B4 5W-30 and Castrol Edge SN 5W-40 lubricants are 502.00/505.00 approved.

Please note that Castrol uses the term 'Titanium' for descriptive/marketing purposes - it is not actually part of the product's name.

                          ...

Nulon recommends their Euro Engine Oil (5W-30) for applications requiring 504/507, but the product is not yet on VW's list of approved oils.

Until then, liability would rest with the lubricant manufacturer (Nulon), rather than the vehicle/engine manufacturer (Volkswagen).

                          ...

All petrol engines (except for certain engines found in some high-performance Audi models, refer to manual) and TDI diesel engines (without unit injectors (PD) or common-rail (CR)) can use 502.00/505.00. 504.00/507.00 is also acceptable.

However, PD TDI and CR TDI engines must use:

                          505.01 (without DPF, fixed intervals)
                          506.01 (without DPF, variable intervals)
507.00 (with or without DPF, fixed or variable intervals).

                          ...

ian's particular Golf has a PD TDI engine with DPF, which requires 504/507 - but was incorrectly filled (twice!) by the workshop with 502/505 oil and some other product.

Yes I realise that from the other thread,

I also understand the oils you mention are approved but as in this thread and the other one people have been mistakenly using "Suitable" oils rather than approved and in one case leaving a word off the name (extra) which changed things considerably

Here is a good page from Castrol which removes any doubt as to which oil is recommended

What I have been trying to get across is that not all SUITABLE oil is APPROVED and therefore could cause angst if used and a problem rears its ugly head.
Like the Crimsafe ad If its not "APPROVED" its not APPROVED

                              You are correct.

                              'Suitable'
                              'Recommended'
                              'Meets or exceeds'

implies that the product has the backing of the lubricant manufacturer and thus, would likely be liable for any issues arising as a direct result of their product. In this instance, this may leave some wiggle room for the vehicle or engine manufacturer to absolve itself of any liability, but I don't know if they can do that without further justification. In my opinion, claiming that "it wasn't on the approved list" shouldn't act as an automatic get-out-jail-free card, especially if the lubricant wasn't the direct cause for the damage, but that's just my personal view.

It should be noted that the lack of any vehicle manufacturer approvals is not necessarily indicative of its quality. Some expensive, high-performance, high-quality or specialised lubricants are often not submitted for the approval process, due to cost, technical restrictions or marketing/relevance reasons, amongst others.

In any case, the concern here for the consumer is that it could potentially result in delays to the warranty repair process while liability is established.

                              'Approved to ... standard/s'

implies that the product has the backing of the vehicle or engine manufacturer, as a result of going through some in-house approval or testing process, and thus, liability should lie entirely with them, as opposed to the lubricant manufacturer.

I imagine if the lubricant was later found to be the direct cause of any issues, VW might be able to demand compensation from the lubricant manufacturer for repair or warranty costs, but that would depend on the arrangements agreed to by the parties involved.

At the end of the day, the approved label completely removes the consumer from any legal-wrangling and/or blame-games, so it's the safest option from a liability point-of-view during the warranty period.

The other problem is that, even if the product is approved, lubricant manufacturers are sometimes not explicit in labelling it as such (e.g. see the above photo re: Castrol and 504 00/507 00 - notice the term 'approved' is nowhere to be seen). Such inconsistency can confuse the consumer, unless he or she has access to the vehicle manufacturer's list of approved oils.
