Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

To all people interested in TDi PD engine oils discussion.

Please note, that some posts here refer to "erwin manual" for which oils are factory approved. I think it is important to be sure that the oil you buy from your local parts store is VW factory approved and not just recommended by the brand which is on the container you buy oil in.

I'm not quaite sure that "Penrite HPR5 Diesel" for example is approved by VW factory.
Please note: "Recommended for VW 506.01".
    Q. By Whom?
    A. Penrite.

I can see a problem there if your engine fail within the warranty period.

I buy Castrol TXT Longlife 2 from the dealer and keep the invoice.

      Hoyhoy.

My daugther & her girl friend, both recently purchased mkv TDI's in black, now the problem is that both are using oil at a fare rate. Today my daughter was told by the service manager to expect to use 1lit./ 1000km. To me this doesn't sound right.

        Moved thread and oil consumption

OK I moved this thread to the new fuels and lubricants forum.

My TDI used no oil right up to the 7500km service. At first this worried me, as I know from past experience that new or recon motors use oil until the oils rings bed in and I had read that I should expect > normal oil consumption when this motor is young. Upon reflection however, this verifies the running in technique that I used. If I had "got it wrong" I would expect to see some oil consumption. At 11,000km it's way too early to make any statement about compression, however I don't believe that this will be a problem in years to come. I reckon that taking it easy until the oil gets hot, hard pulling and hard deceleration (occasionally but not all of the time) and not sustaining the same revs for any period of time gives the rings their best chance to bed in. Check in with me in 5 or 6 years time and we'll see if this is right (if I'm still alive or able to drive at the time )

          TDI Oil Consumption

I have now done 6700 Km in our 2007 VW Caddy and used no oil!

I am running in the engine as suggested by Brackie.

          Regards,

When I sent an e-mail to VW Australia asking which oil is suitable for topping up purposes they stated that fully synthetic oil 0W-30 or 5W-30 is fine but not for servicing.
For servicing you must use 507.00 ( or 507.01) or 506.01 Castrol oil.

            attached is VW reponse

            response 1

Thank you for contacting us through the Volkswagen Australia Website, we appreciate it.

In response to your email enquiry, I can advise you that the correct engine oil for vehicle is Volkswagen 504.00/501.01. Any oil used in the engine therefore must meet with these specifications. Depending on the oil manufacturer as to which one of their oils meet this specification the oil may be either 0w-30 or 5w-30 and must be fully synthetic. The engine oil for use in this vehicle is the same or similar to that as used in some of our high performance petrol engines and as such Diesel engine oil may not be suitable. I would suggest contacting the individual engine oil manufacturers to ascertain which of their oils they recommend to use to meet this specification. Alternatively your dealership would be able to assist you further with the purchasing of engine oil.

reponse 2 after I mentioned that my Golf is diesel

The correct oil viscosity of the 2.0L Tdi golf is 5W30. Please note we supply this grade of oil purely for the convenience of the customer in the case that the VW oil is unable to be obtained. If you are replacing the oil then it must be replaced with the genuine oil only. If it is found that any component has failed due to the incorrect oil being used that part may not be covered under the vehicles warranty .

            Regards

            Adam

506.01 is 0w-30 SLX LongLife2 and you can buy it from the dealer. To me it doesn't matter how much it cost because if you don't use correct oil your engine valve train will eventualy fail, maybe it will be at 80,000km or sooner and than the difference betveen right and wrong oil will be payed many times over. There is a lot of writing at tdi.com forum about it. To me it is not worth the risk.

eddy maybe that figure got squewed along the way somehow? could it have possibly been 1L/10000kms? i have an 07 2.0 tdi that admittedly i drive rather hard but it used the oil down to empty and had the light on at 7000kms. the dealer said this might happen. i would think after around 10000kms the oil useage levels might normalise out?

I agree. I have put around 300ml since I bought it. Done around 8000km.
I am not going to service my car with non specified oil.... diesel engines cost a lot to fix.
