When I inquired around 9 months ago the only oil I could buy was Castrol something from the VW parts dept. in 1 litre containers[you can imagine the price] the only other size from Castrol was a 200litre drum.
I am sure that by now things would be different, going by the no of diesel golfs on the road.
I spoke to the service manager at my dealership & he said they use mobil that meets the spec. & if I bought in a container they would sell me some
to top up if needed. This might be the way to go for you too until the oil becomes more readily available in say 4/5 litre containers.

      Caltex Havoline Synthetic 5W-40 http://www.caltex.com.au/products_oil_detail.asp?id=323 Volkswagen, 502.00 and 505.00 (SAE 5W-40)

TITAN SUPERSYN SL LONG LIFE PLUS 0W30 http://www.fuchs.com.au/html/passeng...ngine_oil.html A full synthetic low viscosity SAE 0W30 engine oil, specifically formulated to meet the requirements and demands of late generation VW and AUDI vehicles requiring specification VW 503 00, VW 506 00 & 506 01.

Castrol stuff is still a dealership only product....but you can use the 5W-40 Magnatec if you are inclined.

If thee were me then I'd go for the Titan stuff.....it is German after all.

        When to change?

My car has only done 1700km. I am interested in this debate about oil but also when to change it. I would think more often is better but my dealer's service department said leave the original oil in for 15,000 because it is special "running in" oil and if I changed it too soon it might not wear in properly.

        cheers Macca

My dealer tells me that they are using an imported castrol product not available through australian dist - I think it was txt3 ? He also says the car comes from the factory with the "running in oil" that should be left in untill at least 5000 klm. My 2.0 has 2700 klm's up with no oil usage at all yet - so I have a while to decide if to change the oil or not - and what to use if I do !

Another oil to add to this list is Motul 4100 turbolight 'Technosynthese Synthetic' SAE 10W-40 --- Car manufacturers approvals VW 501 01 / 500 00 / 505 00, M.B etc. This is a euro oil made in France & was told a premium product.
Who knows if that is true.
It is sold in S.A. by Autobarn ---$44.95 for 5 litres.

After speaking to my dealer's service dept again I was given a different story as to the brand and spec of the oil they use in the current TDI engines - this is a real concern as there are not a lot of VW dealers around and the ones that are should know details like this backwards - isnt that why they try to convince us to go with overpriced dealer servicing ? Asked about a 7500 klm oil and filter change - approx $180 - one filter and less than 4 ltrs of oil. I have not performed an oil change on a TDI but surely it couldnt take more than half an hour ?
Do VW honour the warranty if you dont use a dealer servicing ?

After a lot of research with my Fuchs rep, each new VW engine needs a special oil. The direct injection ( petrol and dsl) need oil that doesn't leave deposits on the injectors and also must meet VW specs if your is serviced by an independant workshop. We carry 6 different oils (1 mineral and 5 synthetic) to cover all the VW and Audi cars that we service and have never had a car knocked back for any kind of warranty work by the dealers.Just make sure that the proper spec oil is used (whatever brand) and there should be no problems.

                        Definitive

Thanks for the qualified answer, Peter... But the question remains:

If the sump is filled with "running in oil" at the factory, and the car is using ULSD and operating in average or normal conditions, do we leave it in until 15,000km or change it to a different oil at 7,500km?

                            Service Interalz

The recomendation from VW Australia is for the first service to be carried out at 15000 km or 12 months which ever occurs first!
