  • Vinyl wrapping....

What's peoples opinions on vinyl wrap?

I want to make my bonnet black...Paint jobs are pretty pricey specially if your like me and don't know anyone in the game.

I do however have a mate who I found out has done vinyl wrapping before and says if I can get the stuff he can do it.

Can anyone give me a heads up? I've read a bit on it so far and done a forum search but not alot of info.

    Cheers

Vinyl wrapping looks crap if its a solid color. It only works if its some sort of design all over like army camo.

Its easy to spray your bonnet black anyway, no need to pay someone to do it. Don't be so scared to get stuck in. Sand it with a scotch bright pad, prep wash it and hit it with a couple of cans of black.

But in my honest opinion it will look crap.....

I disagree. A matt vinyl wrap can look cool. The massive advantage to doing it this way is when the novelty wears off in a few years or if you want to sell it it will take 10 mins and the car will be the same colour as it was originally.

I saw a Polo I think at one of our events that was vinyl wrapped and while you could see the joins when you were close up, more than a few feet back you couldn't. In his case it was all advertising for his business.

The guys comments were basically that it wasn't much cheaper than getting the car fully painted up BUT when it came time to sell he could spend a day removing it and have a car with perfect, non stone chipped etc, paint ready to go. Seems like a great option for things like that.

If it has an engine or heartbeat it's going to cost you.

A friend of mine vinyl wrapped his new Maserati GT with matt black vinyl. If done by an experienced person, you couldn't tell it was vinyl from a few feet away.

I'm with Spyda. Go get some quality spray paint (U-POL etc.), and put some effort into the prep work.

Both my Polo and Caddy are vinyl wrapped in a strong yellow colour, and I'm a big fan of the process. Significantly cheaper than repainting with the added bonus that when you go to sell the car you can un-wrap and return to stock very easily. As mentioned you can see the joins when looking closely if you wrap the whole car, but for panels that can be wrapped with a single piece (like your bonnet) that won't be an issue.

As someone who not too long ago sold a custom resprayed yellow Touareg I can attest to the benefits of buying a popular colour, wrapping to give the look you desire then returning to stock when it comes time to sell.

A number of the OEM matte finishes are now vinyl wraps - including some very high-end Euro models - so the technique can certainly look great if done well.

vinyl on a nu-gen makes sense as the vinyl 3m 10yr or equivalent can be expensive especially for a pro-wrap(still running to @1.8k gbp - 3.5k gbp over here) but as said you get an in your face effect for however long then come sell day its heat guns out, quick detail and bobs your showroom fresh auntie. as for 'wrapping' a bonnet,id be more than inclined to approach a vinyl outlet, grab a couple square metres, squeegee it on and test the look for 30 bucks before trying a homebrew rattle can job

Thanks everyone for the opinions and info.

Jury is still out on it though. Really want a gloss finish to go with the rest of the car...I think matt black in a red mk2 would look a bit wrong...Who knows though could be alright.

I don't really fancy doing a home respray, but yeh could be an option if I had somewhere to do it properly.

                        Wish auto painters were cheaper!

DONT DO IT!! being my old car, i did the styling, i was going to do it, but then i stopped and thought, why wreck a decent paint job, i was goign to spray that whole car satin black, but the red with black bumpers just looks too pimping.

But at the end of the day, its now your car, and the end decision will be yours.

I miss that tghing so much already
