Brad: It actually cost me $54k driveaway. Fully optioned Elegance. I am interested in a new Elegance however, my dealer fiddles around quite a bit and I'm not sure I can wait 16 weeks + for a new car (last delivery took that long). The current stock on show not for me - the engine range is now a little confusing with the diesel. Thinking about spreading around my inquiries. Have to take what is available rather than choose the engine for the car which is what I'd prefer.

it doesn't sound like your dealer did you any favours with the price.

      As i said, you've had near enough 50% depreciation. A $50k Ford would be <$20k trade-in after 3 years.

      And yes, definately shop around.

$54k driveaway, now $27K. Exactly 50%. So still not too far off the redbook figure. I'm sure if you can somehow sell it privately, you should be able to get a couple of thousands more.

Unfortunately there aren't that many stocked Superb around. So you might have to shop interstate to find one that you want if you can't wait. It is annoying, but that is the reason that keeps the resale value better than expected. Like Brad said, if it was a Ford or Holden, it will be less than $20k now. Even a Camry or Aurion, you would be lucky to get $20k.

I don't think the Passat or Audi A4 can do better than that.

When I was looking for something to replace my 1999 Audi A4 quattro I set a budget and started looking. I kept coming back to a Skoda. As I wanted AWD and a wagon (still not sure why) and there were only a few options open. I was offered an excellent trade in at the local dealer but the cars were all at full list price. Then I spied a demo in Canberra for $55K: white, V6, AWD, Wagon, 3 spoke steering wheel, push button tail gate, KESSY, MDI, 5 year factory warranty etc. The only thing it didn't have was a tow bar. They offered a crap trade in but I sold the Audi privately and bought the Skoda for $56K with the tow bar. It didn't have bluetooth and I was happy with that, it is an MY11 car. I don't do a lot of Kms so fuel consumption/costs were not a priority. The dealership was not offering any deals on diesels. I plan to keep the car at least 6-7 years unless something dramatic happens so re-sale was not part of my equation either. Times have changed a lot: I traded a 1985 BMW 323 on the Audi (in 1999) and was given $15K which was 40% of what I paid!

Can anyone tell me when the warranty was changed to 5 years? I assume it's on all cars sold after a certain date, is that right? I'm thinking a used/demo superb wagon might be the go and a long warranty would be great. Cheers.

I know in the beginning of this year, cars sold between Jan 11 to Feb 28 (correct me if I am wrong, it is based on my memory) gets 5 year warranty. I took delivery of my car on Jan 6, so I just barely missed it. I asked my dealer if I could get one, I was told my car was actually sold in Jul last year (when I put in the order), so it wouldn't apply. But they would ask Skoda for it. Well, looks like I got the bonus!

All cars sold after that date only gets standard 3 year. So try some of the demos that were registered at the beginning of this year, you might be lucky! Otherwise, I would recommend you to shop around for some other 3rd party insurance company. The Skoda extended warranty is provided by Allianz anyway, it's not a real "manufacturer" warranty, although terms and conditions are exactly the same as new car warranty.

So they should really, a lot of those deals relate more to the delivery date than anything else. I bought a Mazda 6 years ago in April and it was delivered during June when the factory bonuses were on. I was none the wiser assuming it didn't apply. I found out in a phone call from Mazda one day that I had the extended warranty and roadside service which surprised me. I then remembered I had paid extra for the warranty and Mazda HQ confirmed they had covered it not the dealer, so said I should ask for a refund. Dodgy dealer refused and Mazda HQ said it's up the dealer but it will have a bearing on any future deals with them if they are charging for something they haven't provided.

Cheers guys. Sounds like I better make certain what the situation is with any particular car before I sign up.

That is a damned good question. I have just read my son's Wheels mag with their Gold Star awards & I'm left to wonder at the re-sale %they have come up with. I'd like to see the basis of their calcs. I suspect they've done their math on the basis of dealers asking price on used vehicles, rather than the sell or trade-in price offered to owners. Having bought a Superb Elegance V6 earlier this year, sold as a used car, exSkoda, still in warranty & with less than 10k on the clock, I can confirm the price I paid was 58% of it's original new price, on a 2.5 year old MY10. I looked around for nearly 10 months to see if I could spot a Superb Elegance demonstrator or used car coming to the market & I can assure you there was virtually none available, only the handful of exSkoda TourDownUnder. Hardly the basis for coming up with a residual resale value after 3 years, when there is probably only the one V6 Elegance been in Australia for three years to the best of my knowledge, & that's the one built in June 09 & used for the one road test ever written up & plagarised to death in every Skoda Superb mention since. It introduced the word "quirky" in describing Skoda & stated he liked the wagon. Every subsequent write up has used the same words. Personally, I reckon the sedan looks really good. There are a lot of other profiles on the road that look much disjointed to me. FWIW, to me the wagon looks butt ugly, just like every other commercial travellers wagon. One is left to wonder what role some marketing Einstein at VAG/Skoda might have played in creating & perpetuating the "quirky" image. Such an image is not good for resale.

On timing of Superb Elegance into the Australian market alone, the 3 year resale figures are a fiction as far as I can see.

                      Superb resale value

There are a few Superb Ambitions going on Manheim Fowles for $16.7k if anyone is interested. Some others at $19k too. All with leather.

                      I presume they are ex-Europcar.

$21,900 & $20,000. Worth 34% of original value after 2 yrs. Got to be up there with the worst performing resale values of any car on the market.

That is odd because not only are the values you quoted significantly below Redbook values but your vehicle won the best value Large car under $65k in the 2012 Wheels Gold Star Awards based upon resale. Maybe your experience differs. Bad luck, I guess.

Is it a 2010 or 2011 build? If it is a 2010 then it is effectively a 3 year old car. I am buying a new motorbike and have a 1996 BMW to sell. All the dealers say they treat the red book with a pinch of salt these days (as far as bikes go) as the market is so picky. I was offered over $1,000 (22%) above the red book value as a trade in.

Thats very poor, if reality, you would have to keep the car and run it for a few more years on that basis wouldn't you?

Skodas are overpriced but I saw this the other day which if it is a 2012 build is not a bad price
