  • Battery / Electrical Problems

    Hi guys,

This morning my MY17 Superb had a flat battery. The car wouldn't start at all. The Maxidot said the battery is low on charge.
When I chekced the battery, it was hot!

I called NRMA roadside assistance, the battery specialist showed up, jump started the car, and left his device connect to the battery for 5 minutes, to see if it will charge properly. The battery got really hot and started fuming. (I couldn't tell where the fumes are comimg, either from the battery or somewhere behind the battery but very close).

He said the battery is diffective, and asked me not to drive as it could ignite (or explode).

I have put the car on a flatbed and dropped ot at the dealership.

What could cause this? Is it just a faulty battery?

That's unusual, but yes the battery does seem to be faulty.

Good thing you caught it when you did.

Yeah I guess I was lukcy it didn't catch fire.
I will wait and see what the service centre finds out tomorrow.
I hope they replace it under warranty.

        They should do.

I can't remember what battery warranty is on these, whether it's 1 year, or 3.

Sounds like a dropped cell. One of the 6 cells in the battery dies, and then when the engine runs and charges it, the other 5 cells end up overcharged and start to boil off hdyrogen and oxygen, which is kind of explosive in the right concentrations. Hopefully its a warranty job for you.

Got the car back today. It was a defective battery and was replaced under warranty
This new battery is made in Austria, the old one was made in Korea.

What brand of battery was it originally, most VAG batteries are Varta / Excide...

And what brand is in the car now (obviously Genuine Skoda)?

The old one was a Sebang, the new one is genuine Volkswagen battery.

Odd that your original battery was a Sebang Brand (Manufactured) original fitment Skoda Battery.
That must be how they cut costs...

Is your new battery a Varta or Excide (Manufactured) battery?

I can't really tell who the manufacturer is, the battery has tight sleeve around it.

                        Thanks for uploading the images.
A bit hard to tell what he manufacturer of your new battery is (even though it says Volkswagen Original Batterie).

The 000915105EC EFB battery is a fairly small battery, I assume you have a 162TSI?

I am suprised it is an EFB and not an AGM Battery.

Anyway, all under warranty and back on the road, WELL DONE!!!

No mine is a 206... After reading about start-stop batteries I also thought it is an AGM battery, but it seems they chose to save some money on that... I wonder what battery is on the Passat R or the Arteon.
By the way, in the future, is it safe to replace an EFB battery with an AGM equivalent?

I searched the Varta UK website for the suitable battery for my car, and as you said, they recommended a slightly larger AGM battery.

                            This one:

No issues changing to an AGM in the future, however I hope you get a good 5 plus years on this battery!

The main thing is the specs of the battery are the same as what just came out of the car, so all good there!
