I constantly bang on in these forums about the necessity of checking the accuracy of speedo and odo with a GPS AND also compare the maxidot reported consumption to real consumption before publishing personal achievements.

I think most people take the official figures with a grain of salt. I thought the fuel figures here are done independently of any O/S numbers though as they have an Australian standardised test they use here. Don't understand why it's only the MY16 Golf GTi and not earlier nor any Petrol Skoda RS with the exact same engine, Strange.

Unfortunately all fuel tests are conducted by the manufacturer although the guidelines are very specific as to how they should be conducted.
Quite honestly it blows my mind how you would simulate the road and vehicle characteristics on a rolling road where you have to factor in the vehicle weight, total aero drag etc.
The test specifies acceleration rates (very slow) change points at which rpm, in which gear, how long to take to change gear, then braking, time stationary etc. However that is for manual cars so I presume that auto transmissions can do their own thing.
That would explain why the 1.4tsi with dsg is officially 0.5 l/100 better than the manual and why an old gen 4 Subaru Outback auto with a 4 speed slush box was also more economical than the manual. Same for Ford Falcon 4 litre and so on.
For some reason my old 1.9d manual Octavia mk2 wagon was rated at about 6.3 l/100 in Australia (much worse than the Euro figures) and over 90k km I only had one tank where the average was worse than the very conservative Australian fuel rating.

Over 40 years ago in the UK there used to be an annual fuel consumption competition for the Reliant Robin 3 wheelers only on a specific urban circuit. The best could average better than 100 mpg (2.8 l/100) and average 30 mph.

Anyone experienced a rattling noise upon start up of engine? Car has started doing so just before Xmas and its now idling at higher reves then before, until engine has warned up. I also notice the noise around 2 and 3rd gear (auto). Going to call dealer on Monday to get it checked out...

My aircon sounds like a bag of bolts when its running (compressor on). And there is the starter "start up" noise. Not sure if that's what you are talking about though?

My maxidot was 100% spot on for displayed economy on the many tanks I have just put through it (Brisbane -> wagga, wagga -> port macquarie, port -> brisbane).

Averaged 6.3 L/100 on the way down (wife, kids bootload of stuff and cruise on 118kph)

Averaged 6L/100 on way back - slower average speed overall, but lots more overtaking/heavy acceleration due to idiots on the pacific.

Those are actual pump to pump calculated figures. I did 30k south of Newcastle to Brisbane on one tank! (had stops, detours etc on the way). Pretty good for a petrol!

A little bit like that, it's so hard to explain, but it is around the drivers side of the engine. Most noticeable upon first start of the day, and I'm not running any ac or fans... [emoji53]

Sounds like the starter sound. I noticed mine after about 5000k. A bit of searching and it appears to be a "normal" noise.

Hmm... But the car is idling at higher reves then before, ie it goes up to 3 (which it never used to do), before going to 2.4 and then down to 0.8.

Yeah that def is strange. Even stone cold I dont think i've seen more than about 1300rpm for a fast idle? Which quickly drops to under 1k.

Maybe call the dealer and ask?

                    • I managed to get a spot for this Friday for an initial check. That was the earliest I could get in. Otherwise I would have to wait until the end of January!
Reception was trying to suggest that I use one of their rental cars, rather than go through škoda hq! Wtf!?

                        • I know! I just can't believe that such a large dealership would be so hard all on a loan car.... But then again, I'm not surprised!
I also have to correct the record, the car doesn't rev up to 3k, but goes almost up to the 2k. Either way, it was never this high.

OK. Long time no update on this issue.
After several visits to the now defunct Brighton Skoda, the best they could offer was a "letter" from "VW technician" which stated there was nothing wrong and I should test drive another 6 sp vag vehicle to compare !
So I took it to Peninsula Volks/Skoda for 15k service and asked them to check the 5th gear. As per previous they reported no issue, so i asked to take their service tech for a drive and demonstrate. After 500metres he said, Yes, I see your issue, looks like baulk ring (synchro)
Reported to Volkswagen Aus/Skoda and after followup inspection the gearbox was removed and stripped down. Guess what ? Synchro issue ! So I have a resolution. 3 weeks in the "service" department (Mainly waiting for parts from Volkswagen) and it is back. Fixed. 12 months after pickup and when I immediately reported the issue.

                            Happy days

                            • Nothing wrong with the car itself, but noticed a little bit of something flapping on the passenger rear quarter window. Turns out the tinters have done a bang up job on both rear quarter windows putting the tint film in. Pretty much every bit of rubber has shreds hanging off it, and to top it off the film isn't attached around the edges at all. The dealer has said the tinter will fix it, not doubt they will redo the film which is fine, but they have cut bits of every single bit of rubber including the rubber down in the sill that holds that glass in.

                              • You paid your money to the dealer, so it's their problem to fix the lot.
