Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Yep. It happens, I'm okay with it now. Car is still drivable, going to be assessed on Tuesday. Going to demand a new wheel and hopefully get this one back as a spare. Going from this to the hire car will be interesting though haha

      • It's the time for stupid accidents at the moment, seeing plenty around and did this time last year. It's the busiest time on the roads in general so people are all cranky and impatient. I got hit about this time last year by a new P plater, he had a long way to pull up in the wet and still managed to take out my backside (I was stopped in a line of cars for about 5mins, he just wasn't watching). Luckily for us the car was still ok to drive as we needed it to go camping over Easter, our Octy isn't big enough for the crap we have to bring.

You were in his blindspot, he is well old enough to know to check there but obviously didn't. I don't know what it is about high vis clothed Commo drivers but they definitely overrepresent the shocking driving part of the population, if you drive anywhere in the Western suburbs or to Geelong in Melb, it's guaranteed you will see one driving 20km/hr faster than everyone else doing some stupid things at some point. If they have non original coloured panels the chances are even higher.

I'm really wishing dashcams were built in. Would like to fit one, but with the mess my current car is in after some other aftermarket things were fitted I really don't want to mess with much more.

        • Don't wanna drag the thread ot, but he shouldn't have to check anything. It's a two lane roundabout, all he had to do was stick to his lane and not decide to straddle both. He didn't even flinch at my efforts on the horn.

The crap thing about my route to work and the time i take it, is full of tradies and warehouse workers who mostly drive like idiots.

i blasted my horn at ute who did the same thing to me at a roundabout early this week cause he decided to use both lanes, halfway through a large roundabout. instead of correcting back into his lane, the fcukwit decides to beep back at me!!
he was half a car-length infront, in the left lane going straight, while i was in the right, turing right.

some drivers just don't give a toss.

Man, this is so true. I leave home at 530, and tradies are awful drivers. Tip truck drivers are their equivalent for trucks. Completely reckless.

I would rate both types recklessness as bad as Camry drivers obliviousness.

                • Fitted some lower control arms off an Audi S3. 1.7kg weight saving per side & the rear bush has about 75% less movement in it.

Look like this after a clean-up - I sprayed them with clear lkaquer so they wouldn't get as dirty in the future.

Rear console bush comparison. I think my bushes were getting tired after 150,000km but were still serviceable. You could shift them about 6mm compared to 1-2mm on the non-voided bush

                  S3 lower Control Arm - 2.9kg

Original cast steel lower control arm (the heaviest of the 3 types available). - 4.6kg

Drove it out of the garage and onto the driveway. I was too shagged as I couldn't be bothered breaking out the air tools - that was a mistake. I haven't even taken it around the block.

I figure the NVH shouldn't be a huge issue otherwise all the S3 drivers would be complaining.

The amount of slop in the old bushes was amazing. In the photo you can see how loose the hexagon shaft is. I figure if I can move it 6mm by hand then it would be twice as much under moderate load.

I can only see an upside with this mod.

I think if an Octavia has more than 100k on it they should probably change the bush to the S3 version or at least fit a new standard bush - it's less than $50 in parts.

That is a bike of a serious rider, so hats off to you.
I had a Suzuki Boulevard, Suzukis generally are excellent machines.
I like Suzuki cars as well and was tempted to get a Kizashi ... What do you think of them?
