Is that 6M or DSG? Pretty good improvement over what they claim!

I use my car for work and used to do about 20,000kms a year (hence the diesel) but it's all changed lately. Just checked the logbook tonight and would only do 12,000 km/yr based on the last quarter, a mixture of city/highway including a 10-12 minute highway cruise to work each day. It could well go up again depending on work but at that level the extra cost of an oiler doesn't even break even with the fuel savings over 5 years I don't think... I don't mind though, as there is certainly scope for growth in my mileage if work gets busy again (quite likely).

Looking at Carsales the prices on TSIs really aren't much cheaper than diesels though...

M6 but the DSG does better IMO. I must admit that I deliberately drive for maximum economy because you can't drive fast on my commute due to traffic & multiple police speed / rego traps. Rather than just put thumb in bum & mind in nuetral I try for max economy to keep the brain active & stay alert.

I do about 22,000 - 25,000km pa. Diesel is generally more expensive in Sydney than 98ron. Do you even get 98ron in Tassie? I doubt the diesel would have put me ahead financially but the extra torque would be fun.

That's what I found too no real difference in price.

If you go diesel you've just got to do enough kms so you don't end up with DPF issues. My commutes aren't that long so I usually take it for a decent run once a week or fortnight to get the regen done. I had no issues with my previous diesel with this running pattern. I've only got 2,000kms on the engine so far but my economy is around 6.2l/100km with a 70/30 mix of urban/highway driving.

Ahh cool. Yeah I was like that when I first got the Passat, tended to treat it like a game and see how low I could get the average economy to go. After a while the novelty wore off and I went back to my regular driving style. Slowly round corners (mostly) but 'brisk' in a straight line. I'm not one to putt along at 80-90 in a 110kph zone if I don't have to!

98 RON is available here, yes - but it's still little bit limited - we only got it in about 2004 or something. I used to own a VU SS ute that went over to Melbourne for a cam and heads and it had to be tuned on 95 PULP because we still didn't have BP Ultimate at that stage. And I think (don't quote me - haven't actually looked for a while) that diesel would be cheaper than Ultimate here.

That's pretty good. I don't think I'll have any problems doing enough kms, at the very least it goes to the inlaws for dinner every fortnight (~50kms each way, all highway) so that'll give it enough if the highway run each day doesn't. I didn't have any issues in almost 2 years with the Passat.

I am a little surprised there isn't much of a price difference to buy but then I guess there's only $1k difference in RRP and right now the prices are a bit all over the place - seems like some dealers are not trying too hard to move them on since there is going to be a wait for the new one, others are a bit more keen to see them go.

            Here is my 2 cents.

Diesel - Quieter than my A3 19.tdi (but that is a PD not a common rail). It is about the same noise as my old 1.8T, but then is is a touch noisier than the TSI. This is only noticeable at idle, once over about 1200rpm, it is really quiet. It will will be quieter than your VU SS ute.

The fuel economy depends on how and when you drive. If you are driving <5km each day then the diesel never gets to regen the DPF. I had the DPF light come on the A3 a few days ago. You dont need a highway drive, just need to basically keep one gear down from normal so the temp can get high enough to regen so keep oat or over 2000rpm. I have regen'd the A3 at 60km/h. The regen i did a few days ago I didnt get over 80. You really just need a log enough road where you dont have to stop/start and the exhaust can get hot enough. A3 avg's about 4.5l/100 for mostly city and some highway.

Still the DPF regen is something you always have in the back of your mind. Keep that in mind when I was returning from the airport on the weekend and saw avg fuel dip to 4.8l/100km for my 50km trip home in the RS. About 50/50 highway/suburban. Got a good run with the lights though. Overall I would be averaging ~6.5l/100 in the RS.

Like you said, if you dont do as many km's then petrol closes the gap to diesel. Then again, 98RON is up to $1.65 and diesel $1.50-$1.55 in melb.

Driving. The diesel cant beat the tsi top end, but mid range is superb. I havent got a re-map (yet) but it will be first on my list of mods.

In Tassie, you dont have traffic, so diesel should excel for fuel especially with the windy roads you have. The mid range will come into its own on tassie roads, where as the tsi will be cog swapping a lot more. Not that that is an issue, it will be more relaxed when you want it to.

Leather. Factory was $1400 option, and you got the vRS in the seat backs. After market, you wont get that, but you get more options etc, such as the red leather stitching. They only did the red stitching on the steering wheel, arm rests and doors.

Your call though. It was my wife that wanted leather, I was happy with stock, now leather is great, but I would still have been more than happy with stock.

As for the price you pay? I wouldnt sell mine to anyone for at least $50k. Actually, I wouldnt sell my vRS to anyone except maybe to swap for a new model RS4 wagon.
            2001 - A4 B6 1.8T Sedan Manual - (sold @ 254,000km)
            2008 - A3 8P 1.9tdi Sportback Manual - (sold 90,000kms)

            2013 - Octavia RS wagon - 1z - Race Blue - TDI - 6M - Leather - MDI - Whispbar S44W - LED interior kit - RVC forward?/retrofit - Mk3 gear shifter
            2021 - Q3 S-Line wagon - F3 - Daytona Grey - Westfalia towbar - no other options available.

As far as the economy goes, I do a lot of highway, mixed with a lot of Sydney traffic (M5 car park; Sydney CBD; etc etc) as well as fun driving (Macquarie Pass; Royal Nasho; etc) and generally don't worry about economy - if I'm gonna spend another $5 to have some fun, sobeit.

              My economy readings are awesome.

Well, after continuing to think about it, I would buy petrol (in the right colour/trim combo at the right price) but still have a very strong preference for a diesel.....

However I am not having much luck with dealers. Most do not seem willing to discount much (if at all) - perhaps the fact that I am on the phone is making it harder for them to take me seriously? Mostly they are just giving me their advertised price less on roads and to me it is really not worth buying at that price. Firstly some of the cars are even MY12s... and I know that the new RS will likely come out with promo pricing with free on roads etc (so essentially will be the same price as what I'll be paying, but with all the new features). I know there aren't too many left but surely they want to move them??

It makes no sense for me to pay full price for the old model right now. I leaned on one dealer fairly hard yesterday for a better price on the car I wanted - he came back to me today saying $40k (without ORC) was the best he could do on his MY12 RS... I got an email today from a VW dealer I've been speaking to who will do a very nice demonstrator MY13 Passat TDI wagon with 2000km on it and some fancy accessories for the same money - WTF?

I might also be being a little choosy in what I want, but being this is the first time I have bought a brand new car I don't really want to settle for a colour I don't particularly like or miss out on leather (which was one of the whole reasons for trading up).

Tomorrow is another day I guess... but it has been a bit of a frustrating experience so far and it really seems that Skoda aren't too interested in moving the stock at a price the market is willing to pay.

Funnily enough, I was looking at carbroker.com.au this evening. Was thinking of firing off an enquiry but was going to wait until tomorrow, as I am waiting on a response from another dealer I spoke to today.

Bit pessimistic about it though. There aren't many of these cars left in the country so not sure how much better they'll do - doesn't hurt to try though I guess. Thanks

I have never known Skoda to do promo pricing on launch. People will be lined up preordering the RS, you will find the prices will be very fixed with bugger all discounting going on for most of next year. Free onroads really only happens with previous years stock at the end of the year. With the way stock levels are going, there won't be many if any spare the end of next year, maybe the year after...

The end result is that there will be no RS cars here physically able to buy until most likely nearly a year from now. So they can charge what they like as there are simply no others to buy. If you want the new model, go for a petrol Elegance, it is arguably better than the outgoing RS anyway.

Well, I mentioned that because that's what a dealer told me today would likely happen, given the reduced price of the new model vs the old, in order to get a few more cars in the road early in the cycle. But it's all guessing games of course.

I will look at the Elegance as well though.

Gee, if they are suddenly charging retail, I'm sure they'd offer me a good trade for my VRS too. LOL

I'm hopeless on the phone and prefer some eyeball to eyeball contact, but I have friends that swear by calling 3 dealers and playing their prices off one another. That seems like a lot of work and I'm not sure it'd work in this situation. Just remember to say, "We have a deal on the condition that you don't try to sell me any aftersales bullsh**". With the Skoda, the guy started in on paint protection and I was a bit rude about the deal being off. My wife was rather embarrassed.

I might be moving my white 2012 VRS wagon shortly 23000ks black leather/sunroof/mdi plus the super skoda front spoiler (looks sick)
Have to take on a mortgage by myself so the skoda might be a luxury ill have to give up.

Got the paint and interior protection thrown in too!

Sounds like a nice car sbm - good luck with the sale if it happens!

I pulled the trigger on a brand new one today though. Brilliant Silver TDI wagon with leather, and I've got the dealer retrofitting MDI. Probably still paid a little more than I really wanted to with a new one round the corner, but it was the best deal I could find.

The contract is signed and deposit paid, I'm just waiting on finance - will post a bit more info once it's all finalised, as the dealer has been extremely helpful - far more so than any other that I phoned (and they also offered the best price up front).
